THE PRESIDENT HAS SEEN dat NEWS SUMMARY August 6, 1974 (Mon nets, wires, papers) The major stories are: AP leads: "Conceding he w/held some WG evidence from Hill and his own lawyers, RN made public a t'script showing he authorized attempt to thwart FBI WG investigation" UPI leads: "RN acknowledged/Sh8rtly after WG break-in he acted to slow FBI investigation knowing it'd protect his re-election Comm. and w/held this from Judiciary and Supreme Court. "RN stunned the country" and caused a "storm" in DC, led NBC "The Nixon Presidency is virtually being overtaken by events, led CBS, citing resignation calls and RN statement Also led ABC w/13-17 mins. on all shows. All nets noted RN acknowledged info may further damage his case, that he accepted full responsibility and apologized w/deep regret for keeping data from lawyers, Hill and public, and that he regards impchmnt as foregone conclusion. But, all shows also noted, RN doesn't feel the evidence in its entirety or in perspective justifies extreme step of impchmnt and removal. T'scripts show RN was aware of WG connection w/campaign and CRP financing and that CIA was being pressed to set up a cover, said ABC RN was aware of plan to use CIA as cover for his campaign workers, said NBC Whether it's smoking pistol or just a potential problem is being left to Senate, said CBS. RN's throwing himself on Hill's mercy, said ABC All nets quoted same section from t'script where HRH said FBI was getting into problem areas and RN told him to get CIA to tell the FBI to "stay the hell out. CBS focused on concern over CRP money links; ABC/NBC noted RN concern w/Hunt and all that he knew. UPI leads: "VP, the man who'd succeed RN if he were removed, took himself out of impch debate and indicated there'd be trial in Senate.' As noted by ABC/CBS, VP said "public's no longer served by my expressed belief that, on basis of all known to me and public, RN's not guilty of impchble offense Inasmuch as add'l evidence is forthcoming I intend to respectfully decline to discuss impchmnt Jones of CBS saw the new t'scripts as giving VP all he needed to "jump ship" and to "abandon his defense.
