The Vice President took over the meeting. Dr. Abernathy
introduced a Mrs. Grass, an Indian from Oklahoma, who had
arrived after the meeting began, and who made a speech. "We're
common, grass-roots poor people. We're the poor-poor. This is
my fourth trip to Washington, D.C. to get this problem licked. "
She deplored the plight of the Indians, saying they had been put on
reservations and told to wait. "We waited 500 years. From now
on, I don't intend to go to bed hungry, and to get up hungry. I'm the
mother of eleven children. " She declared that "we're not going to
let you decide for us any more. All you want to do is terminate.
You're going to exterminate us. 11 She described in detail her
troubles with a local school official, who refused to provide the
Indian children with hot lunches, referred to her four trips to
Washington, and said that "I'm SO in debt now, I'll probably have
to go to work to pay these expenses I've been running up. 11
Secretary Finch noted that the new Administration, for the
first time, was asking full funding of the school lunch program.
Dr. Abernathy, asking that "we please make our statements
as brief as possible, 11 then introduced a Mrs. Evans of Birmingham,
Alabama, who declared that "I am here to speak for every poor
