MEMORANDUM FOR:
ALEX BUTTERFIELD
FROM:
BILL SAFIRE

1. The President called everyone's attention to the fact
that Mayor Will Hays of Crawfordsville, Indiana, had been seated

in the Postmaster General's chair -- the same one occupied by
his grandfather in the Harding Administration.
2. Mayor Joseph Alioto of San Francisco, before taking
issue on the funding of urban renewal projects with Cap Weinberger,
Politics
said that he -- as a Democrat -- had supported Republican
Weinberger when he ran for the Assembly in California years ago,
Revenue
and had even contributed to his campaign. Weinberger called it
Fannies Sharing
"an early form of revenue sharing, " and the President wanted to
know: "Did you report it?"

3. Mayor John Lindsay said that the turnover in Mayors was
terrific -- that he had been amazed to discover that he was the 3rd
senior in the group. The President said that he had met with the
Mayors' group two years ago, and that half of them were not here
today. "Not because they were beaten, but because most of them
quit. It's often been said that whoever sits in this chair of mine
has the toughest job in the world. But the fact is that at times your
job -- out there on the front lines -- is infinitely more difficult.
It's up to us in Washington to make certain we don't make your hard
jobs any harder. "
