Dear Bob:
On the James Cagney matter about which I have already spoken
to you on the phone, the following items are the facts.
On June 2, at the Screen Directors Guild, the motion picture
industry will honor Jim Cagney on the beginning of his 30th year
in the industry. There will be a party that evening preceeded by
a showing of Cagney's latest film, "Shake Hands With The Devil, "
the story, incidentally, of the closing days of the Irish rebel-
lion in which Cagney plays a rebel leader. There will also be
shown some film clips from some of his 61 motion pictures which he
has made since his first film was released in 1930.
Cagney was born and raised in the slums of New York's east
side. He became a dancer on the New York stage in 1919 and toured
the country in the early 120's with his wife, the former Frances
Willard Vernon, in a vaudeville act until the late 120's when he
entered a career of acting in serious drama. He then came to
Hollywood.
He has been married to the same woman for over 30 years, has
twice been president of the Screen Actors Guild, has won the Academy
Award for his portrayal as George M. Cohan in "Yankee Doodle Dandy"
and has been active in numerous philanthropies. He and his wife
have two children, a home in Beverly Hills, a ranch in the San Fernan-
do Valley on which he raises quarter horses, ahhome at Martha's Vine-
yard in Massachusetts and a cattle breeding farm in upper New York
State. He has been extremely interested in scientific farming in
recent years. During the War he made a number of training and infor-
mation films and toured for the USO.
I
would like to suggeste that Dick write a short, personal
note to Cagney on the beginning of his 30th year in the business.
It need not go into detail, just congratulate him if you wish. We
will publicize it here and naturally, you are free to do so there.
If you have any questions concerning this, please call me col-
lect at the number above. Incidentally, you can address the let-
ter to Cagney at 2069 Coldwater Canyon, Beverly Hills, but please
mail it to me here.
my best,
