Dear Metropolitan Leonty:
I want to thank you for your letter concerning
the status of property of the Russian Orthodox Church in
the United States following the Supreme Court decision of
June 6, 1960, Kreshik V. St. Nicholas Cathedral. You may
be sure that only the demands of a heavy travelling schedule
have prevented me from answering long before this, and
unfortunately they also deprive me of the pleasure of meeting
my friend, Miss Tolstoy, to discuss the question.
I can well understand the concern among your
parishioners regarding church property. In view of your
desire to seek legislation covering the subject, I can only
suggest that you refer your case to your Senator and Con-
gressman, as well as to the Chairman of the Senate Judiciary
Committee, which would appear to have primary interest in
this matter in the Congress. As you know, I cannot myself
introduce legislation.
With all best wishes,
Sincerely,
Richard Nixon
His Eminence
The Most Reverend Leonty
