FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
REMARKS DELIVERED BY RABBI OSHER ZILBERSTEIN OF LOS ANGELES
AT THE CONFERENCE OF JEWISH ORGANIZATIONS AT THE SHOREHAM HOTEL,
WASHINGTON, D.C. ON JANUARY 18, 1956.

Benjamin Franklin, one of the founders of American liberty,
whose 250th birthday is being remembered now in America, has this
among his proverbs, which by the way you can find on the cover of
the last number of the Saturday Evening Post, which he founded.
It reads:
"If all Printers were determined not to print anything till
they were sure it would offend nobody, there would be very little
printed."
To paraphrase Benjamin Franklin, let me say that if the Jewish
people do not press their cause properly lest they offend the
powers of the world, there will be very little said - which will
be much to our disadvantage.
Let us then follow the lead so ably started last evening by
Ambassador Eban and Dr. Goldmann and proclaim to the world and
demand of them justice for the cause of Israel.
You will remember that in 1894, when a military clique of
France, out of racial motives, maliciously accused Captain Dreyfus
of high treason and sentenced him for life to Devil's Island,
Emile Zola, the forthright champion of justice, published his
famous open letter to the President of France titled "I Accuse".
The impact of that letter reverberated throughout France and
the entire civilized world. It took sometime and justice was
restored.
