Dear Howard:
I am delighted for the country that you have accepted the important task of
restoring the Administration and the Reagan presidency. The United States is
very fortunate to have a person so widely respected, and with such a
distinguished record in elective office, that even the opposition praises the
appointment. Your abilities in achieving the practical compromise will stand the
country in good stead.
I know first hand from working with you in 1964 and 1966 that you can handle the
excesses of the "True Believers" with finesse and achieve practical progress. I
count riding along on the Middle Tennessee campaign circuit a unique yet very
practical civic learning experience.
The prayers and the hopes of the Country and the Party are with you.
Sincerely,

Dear Senator Baker:
I saw your initial press conference yesterday and I was very
impressed with the way you came across.
I have an idea that may be useful. I always thought the past
presidents should be used more by the current president. Despite
ideological and other differences, it would be a service to the
country to use them particularly as special Ambassadors where they
could go for the current president. For example, Carter to
Latin-America, Nixon to China or Russia, Ford to Mid-East. Their
presence would be significant.
As a start, President Regan should meet with them together for
lunch at the White House and discuss ideas with them. Even that would
be a first and significant step.
I hope you enjoy your new position and best of luck.
Sincerely
PFF/nlp
P.S. Perhaps you may remember me as the Mayor of Pittsburgh (1970-78)
and then I served briefly as Deputy Attorney General in the
Justice Department under Griffin Bill.

Dear Mr. Leader,
I used to admire you for your intelligence and perceptive
skills, but now that I have to rule out those attributes I guess
I'll have to come up with some other rationale. Just kidding; I
am absolutely thrilled for the country and for Ronald Reagan that
you made this obvious sacrifice to accept this post.
As you know, I have always had the utmost respect for you
and confidence in you which has now been elevated even more by
your recent actions. It goes without saying that I stand ready
to do anything I can to help you in your enormous task. I
believe that you have a fantastic resource in Ronald Reagan, and
with good quality recommendations and political suggestions he
can once again emerge as the strongest U.S. leader in over half a
century.
Again, I am thrilled and let me know if I can do anything to
help you.

Dear Howard:
This by no means is the first of a long list
of expressions of appreciation to you for your action
of setting aside all personal considerations to
assist our Nation in a moment of serious
embarrassment.
To say that you are courageous in undertaking
the assignment of the President's Chief of Staff is
only part of my admiration and respect for you. I
am sure the decision to give up your private life
and your immediate political ambitions, whatever
they were, was most difficult. However, Howard,
once again you have chosen a course of service to
your country at a time of need, and I assure you
that the people of this Nation (with very few
exceptions) feel the need and are buoyed up by your
decision to help us through an incredible experience.
Only one with your background and knowledge could

My warm congratulations, and, as a citizen, my
sincere appreciation.
