When Mrs. Reagan visits the convention floor Wednesday
afternoon to familiarize herself with the podium from which
she will speak Wednesday night, she will tape a 10-minute
interview with CBS (probably Bill Plante) for use that
evening.
After her remarks to the delegates Wednesday night we are
planning to put AP writer, Larry Knudsen, in her limosine
for an interview on the trip back to the Anatole.
THURSDAY, AUGUST 23
From 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m., Mrs. Reagan will tape three 10-
minute interviews in succession with each network morning
show for use Friday morning and one with CNN which is
providing extensive convention coverage and drawing huge
audiences:
ABC - David Hartman (Amy Hirsh, contact)
NBC - Bryant Gumbal (Margie Lehrman, contact)
CBS - Diane Sawyer or Bill Kurtis (Jim Miller, contact)
CNN - Bernard Shaw (Gail Evans, contact)
From approximately 8:00 p.m. to 8:18 p.m., Mrs. Reagan will
visit the anchor booths at NBC and ABC to be interviewed
during the live coverage before the President's acceptance
speech:
8:02 p.m. - 8:08 p.m. - Tom Brokaw (Bill Wheatley, contact)
8:10 p.m. - 8:18 p.m. - Peter Jennings (John Armstrong, c.)
Mrs. Reagan will have had a pre-convention interview with
Helen Thomas, UPI, at 2:30 p.m., Thursday, August 16 at the
White House, and with Marilyn Schwartz, Dallas Morning
News, for a "High Profile" piece to appear on the morning
of August 22.

Dear Mr. President:
The Texas Rangers of the American League will be playing
the Chicago White Sox in Arlington Stadium, just halfway
between Dallas and Fort Worth, on August 20, 21 and 22
at 7:30 p.m. Fran and I would very much like to have you
and Mrs. Reagan attend a ball game and sit in the owner's
box with us.
I know how very busy you will be, and how difficult it is
for you to move from place to place, but I just wanted you
to know you are invited. Your presence at such an event
would be a great thing for the whole State of Texas, one
that would certainly get lots of good publicity.
Our stadium is comparatively small, in an area that is
easily protected. We have a parking lot of about 125
acres, which would provide ample space for a helicopter
to land. The owner's box can be well protected and could
be equipped with bullet-proof glass if necessary. We would,
of course, like to have you throw out the first ball, but
I am sure that would involve far too much exposure.
I feel somewhat apologetic about even inviting you to do
this when your time is so valuable, but Fran and I both
want you and Mrs. Reagan to know how important you are
to us, and we want to do anything possible to help you in
your reelection effort.
Our very, very best wishes and much love to you both. If
there is anything at all we can do to help you during your
Dallas visit, please let us know.

1984 Republican National Convention
Attached is the list of people from your office which we have
agreed will travel to the Convention as part of the White House
Group. We will arrange the travel plans for these people and
will make their hotel room assignments at the Anatole Hotel.
All of those people who do not regularly travel with the
President on Air Force One will be departing Washington on
Tuesday, August 21st from National Airport on Braniff #55 at
1:25 p.m. This flight also stops at Dulles departing there at
2:00 p.m. and arrives in Dallas at 4:15 p.m. Transportation
will be provided from the Dallas Airport to the Anatole.
Everyone will be pre-registered and will have information
packets in their rooms as with any Presidential trip.
Assistants to the President will be provided with cars out of a
motor pool. We encourage all others to use the readily avail-
able shuttle bus which will operate between the Anatole Hotel
and the Convention Center. Information on passes and tickets to
the center will be provided later.
Each Assistant to the President is also invited to bring his or
her spouse.
Transportation back from Dallas for those not traveling with the
President will be on Friday, August 24th departing Dallas
Airport on Braniff #52 at 11:00 a.m., arriving at Dulles at 2:55
p.m.. and then onto National Airport arriving at 3:25 p.m.
We would appreciate it if you would check with the other members

It occurs to me we should try to work into the
program several Senators who are in some re-election
jeopardy. Therefore, I propose:
1. Sen. Percy to introduce the Cabinet members
who will be seated in their VIP box. Maybe
Monday.
2. Sen. Jepsen to introduce any Olympic winners
who may be in a VIP box. Monday.
3. Rep. Gramm to nominate the Vice President on
Wednesday.
4. Sen. Cochran to introduce the Vice President
for his Acceptance Speech on Thursday.
5. Sen. Helms to introduce the U.S. Marine,
wounded in Lebanon, who was dramatically
visited in the hospital by General P.X. Kelly.
Monday or Tuesday.
6. Sen. Goldwater be programmed for a five-
minute speech segment on Monday night. This
will surely be added later, so I recommend
we do it now.
Rather than have a convention meeting, will you check
this with all White House parties concerned?

As I told you earlier today on the phone, The Dallas
Morning News would like to interview Mrs. Reagan for a
special "High Profile" section that we are planning to run
during the Republican National Convention.
The interview would be conducted by Marlyn Schwartz, and
we like the idea of timing the article for the paper of August
22, which would be the morning of the salute to Mrs. Reagan
at the convention.
We would be able to meet our deadlines with an interview
at the White House on Thursday August 16 or Friday August 17,
though we would naturally prefer an earlier date. Ms. Schwartz
is planning to be in California to cover the August 14th wedding
of Patti Davis and would be interested in any possible access to
Mrs. Reagan during that period. However, we understand how busy a
period that will be for her.
