across the country, and by many others in foreign countries. We think
these broadcasts provided a special public service by giving the
insight which only the President could give into how he goes about--

the ranch"? If that was the title of
Barbara Walters' interview with Presi-
dent Reagan, she missed her target
by
"Freedom of the press" - or
nos, insolence?
The guided tour, the house, the flash-
backs of old movies and childhood
reminiscence - all very nice and
pleasant as a fireside chat. And that is
exactly what it should have been. But
to corner the president of the United
States with highly sensitive questions
about his closest advisers (no matter
how timely), his feelings and possible
decisions, was not only inappropriate
but in bad taste and completely out of
line. Ms. Walters, there is a thing
called tact" that even an aggressive
reporter thould have and exercise!
Nuclear attack, 17 minute "grace
period" to decide whether the world
will be blown up, presidential "night-
mares" about it. Ms. Walters, these
questions overstepped your potential
as a journalist, embarrassed (visibly!)
the president and should only come up
at the Oval Office - not "at home on
the ranch.' For one slip of the tongue
(yours or the president's) picked up by
the ever hungry horde of the news
media and, as usually, misinterpreted,
could do a lot of harm to the country.
A little more modesty, a lot more

Should We Give First Ladies a Break?
In her harsh attack on Nancy Rea
gan ("Bad Image," Nov. 20), Judy
Mann makes some statements that
suggest her entire column is little more
than a "cheap shot." In referring to
Mrs. Reagan's support of the foster
grandparent program, Mrs. Mann cites
the program as "a nice example of
volunteerism, but hardly a substan-
tive issue."
It is a 'very substantive issue that
Mrs. Reagan has embraced, even if
Mrs. Mann did not discuss the enor-
mous good work done by foster grand-
parents for mentally retarded, physi-
cally handicapped and troubled youth.
In these centers of volunteerism, a
wonderful relationship develops be-
tween the young and the elderly. Each
has something to give, and all have
something to gain, whether it be a mat-
ter of caring or a candle of hope.
As director of ACTION, the agency
that oversees the foster grandparents, I
issue an open invitation to Mrs. Mann
to join me in visiting one of our local
foster grandparents sites. Perhaps then
she might reconsider her opinion that
this is not a substantive program.

Dear Mr. Deaver:
Having completed 90 days around the country I called Ms. Moore
yesterday to give my observations as I have in the past and was able
to write them:
1. Most people appear to be willing to give the economic program
a chance.
2. Many people were concerned of cuts to retirees and the elderly.
There is more respect in this country for the elderly since WWII.
3. Jerry Falwell will hurt the Republican candidates in 1982.
(2 students at Lynchberry said he was a crook and a con artist.)
4. Most felt the President should campaign for candidates via TV, etc.
rather than in person for security reasons.
5. Several wealthy people agreed with me that we would have a "boom"
in Sept. '82 brought on by the need for housing and construction.
6. I suggest more PR work on the economic program from the Administration.
7. Several questioned the need for a "middle man" --The National
Security Advisor--when they felt it had been a thorn in the side
of both Presidents. They feel if the position had to remain it
should be left vacant.
8. Many want action against Lybia and want to re-institute the Monroe
Doctrine and take Cuba. Central America seemed a mystery to most.
9. Many large concerns are employing illegal aliens. Texans and
Floridians seem ready to fight the Cubans and Mexicans in the country.
You have a number of people there that should know. There is great
dissention against them and the blacks. The police in Dallas told
me I could go on the east side and buy enough military equipment
to start a war.
10. On unemployment: During WWII when jobs were available we had 2%
unemployment. I believe the people who won't work would now be at

least 5%; if true we have 3% unemployment - not 8%.
11. I believe in the B-1 bomber and the MX missle. But I think the
shuttle program and the Laser Research program is an important
from a military standpoint.
12. Once Congress passes the appropriation bills, I think they would
serve the nation's interest best by going home. We need 9 more
months of hope and evaluation and I believe even the President
will be surprised and pleased at the results. People are tired
of critics.
Boots had a bad fall in Texas and we are back awaiting word from the
White House on a position which they have had under consideration for months.
They indicated the first of the year looks good.
