I am writing to ask if it would be possible to arrange an
interview with you in March.
I am chief television news producer in Adelaide for the
Australian Broadcasting Commission, but also a radio broadcaster for our
network on American presidential matters. It is a radio interview with you
that I would like to arrange.
I am also working on a research paper covering Mr Reagan's
campaign leading to his election, and on key developments in his Presidency
as perceived in Australia.
In that project, and in my regular radio broadcasts, I am
trying to explain events to a general Australian audience increasingly
interested in the Presidency.
I shall be in Washington from Tuesday March 9th to Friday
March 12th inclusive. In the course of that week I hope to be doing a series
of interviews with relevant people in the city.
I have met Mr Ed Hind of the USICA office in Melbourne,
Aust., and I'm sure he would be able to arrange supply of any information
that may be required to substantiate my position.
I realise that there are many duties foreseen and unforeseen
that may prohibit you giving a few minutes of your time for an informal interview.
However I would certainly appreciate hearing from you on this request.

You will probably have on file my letter of May last
year when I expressed regret at having had to end a brief visit to
Washington without having been able to interview Mr. Deaver.
I wanted the interview to include in my regular radio
broadcasts with the Australian Broadcasting Commission, and also to
boost information for a book I'm writing designed to aquaint Aust-
ralians with the Reagan Presidency.
I was in the U.S., including Washington, in October/
November last year as a sponsored guest of the U.S.I.A. to study
the Congressional elections.
I am hoping to make another private visit in June and
this time I really would like to have the opportunity to interview
Mr. Deaver.
Being an irrepressible Australian journalist, and
something of an optimist, I would also like to land an interview
with the President.
Comments by the President from time to time have shown
that he has an interest in Australia, SO he might be prepared to
give up a few minutes.
My preliminary schedule is to be in Washington from
June 20 to June 30th. In your letter to me of January 26th, 1982
you said it was impossible for you to schedule events more than a

Right. What I really would appreciate is how best
to get myself positioned for an interview with Mr. Deaver (which
I definitely would like) and how to get wait-listed with the
President.

Mr. Deaver appreciates your interest in his
position as Assistant to the President and
Deputy Chief of Staff. However, because of
the hundreds of requests we receive for school
projects, he is unable to respond to each one
personally.
His duties in the White House encompass many
areas. He has the responsibility for the
President's schedule and the advance work
done on the trips the President takes. He
is also "overseer" of Mrs. Reagan's office.
His daily activities change daily, but most
of the day is spent in meetings with the
President.

Recently President Reagan had an opportunity to speak before
the Commonwealth Club of California. At this function Professor
Jeanne Crank had a scheduled brief encounter with the President.
She offered to present the enclosed letter, with attached
documents, to President Reagan; unfortunatly, a secret service
agent refused her permission while waiting in the reception line.
Jeanne then gave the original copy to the agent, asking him to
present it to the President.
The reason I am writing to you, is to ask that you review
the letter and documents. Please look at the two issues raised
and forward any recommendations to the appropriate officials.
Additionally, on the issue of a Presidential Commission on
Youth Service Alternatives I enclose a recent reply from

Dear Mike:
Thank you very much for including me in the support-group
briefing and luncheon yesterday. I was deeply honored to
have been invited as well as being seated so close to the
President during lunch. I sincerely thank you.
In line with our brief conversation, it is my understanding
that Rick Holt has communicated with Craig Fuller on the
subject of withholding on savings and dividends and that
several Senators are working on a hopeful solution to the
problem.
The President is absolutely correct; we should close any
and all loopholes that permit taxpayers to cheat; however,
it appears to me the present legislation is such that most
of the people who are being asked to implement the system
and work with the taxpayers (explaining and dealing with
their complaints, etc.) are the very ones that are opposed
to this system, thus opening a pandora's box.
Mike, as you know, I have supported the President from the
very beginning and will continue to support him. This letter
is solely to express my concern for the President on this
issue and what long-term impact it may or may not have on
his administration. I sincerely hope some dialogue can be
developed on this matter, and if I can be of any assistance
in bringing it about, I would be happy to serve.
