Dear Mike:
Since the President will be visiting the D-Day Beaches
and American Cemetery in Normandy on June 6th marking the
40th Anniversary of the Allied Invasion, the Forbes family
ardently hopes he can include a brief visit to our Chateau de
Balleroy--and our Musee des Ballons, the only museum in the
world devoted to ballooning. We are fifteen to twenty miles
from the beaches, a few minutes by helicopter and not too
much more by car.
Two days after the President's Normandy visit we will
be holding the Ninth International Invitational Balloon Meet,
with 30 plus balloons from 20 countries--including China and
Pakistan where we introduced the sport and presented them
with hot air balloons.
I know thought was given to a possible visit by the First
Lady to Chateau de Balleroy when she was previously in France,
but as the itinerary developed it just didn't prove to be
possible.
Enclosed, Mike, is a wee bit about the Chateau, as well
as last year's Balloon Meet. Since we bought this Mansart gem
many years ago, the restoration has been completed and its
current fame as an international ballooning center has brought
many additional visitors to the area. Because it has been an
American family undertaking and it salutes the French achieve-
ment in making man's first flight 201 years ago, a visit by the
President would be warmly received as an expression of apprecia-
tion for this ongoing contribution to Franco-American friendship.

Hear Mr. Deaver:
the turn of the year I sought on behalf of my paper an
nterview. with the President to mark his anticipated decision
to run for re-election. I was in touch first with David
Gergen, and later Les Janka and others, finally being told
that the President would be concentrating his attention on
American publications, but that I should ask again on the
leve of his visit to Europe. (My editor, Donald Trelford,
also pursued the request at that time through the U. S.
Embassy in London, from whom he received the same answer).
Since then, of course, both Mr. Gergen and Mr. Janka have
left the White House, and I realise that you have taken on
the responsibility for scheduling press interviews with the
President. I was told that our request would be kept on a
list, but that I should remind your office again in writing
of our continuing interest in having an interview with
Mr. Reagan, which is what I am now doing.
I enclose copies of two of my original letters, and one
reply I received from Mr. Gergen at an early stage in the
process - I later communicated by phone with his office.
These give some background about our paper. At that time
Mr. Trelford himself was interested in joining me in the
interview, and would be again if you were willing and the
timing could be worked out.

The Senate Majority Whip, Ted Stevens, is planning a dinner in

Senator Stevens plans to hold the dinner in the Great Hall of the us
Library of Congress. (This is the same site Senator Baker has used
for the Senate dinners he hosted at the beginning of each new
Congress.)

As you may know, McNeil-Lehrer has had a longstanding
request that was postponed due to Jim Lehrer's recent
illness. In this light, I feel it might be a good
time for the President to grant the interview.
I have also asked Larry Speakes for his comments on
the request. He feels that NewsHour does not attract
a large enough audience, and that the President could
be granting a more effective and more widely viewed
interview with his time. He recommends that the
President not do the interview.

Dear Mike:
The NewsHour, representing Public Television's sole coverage of
the 1984 nominating conventions, will be broadcasting from Dallas during
the week of the Republican National Convention. Both Robin and Jim
will be there, along with Judy Woodruff, to report in-depth on the
events and issues surrounding the expected nomination of President Reagan
to a second term. We will be anchoring from station KERA in Dallas, with
a remote hookup to the convention hall. In addition to our two regular
early evening feeds to the eastern and central time zones, we will produce
a 6:00 p.m. PST Convention update for the west coast stations, which also
will be suitable for re-broadcast to the other time zones. On Thursday
night, we expect to extend that third broadcast so that the President's
acceptance speech can be covered in its entirety.
We would like to interview Mr. Reagan for our first broadcast of
the convention week. The focus would be on the past four years in office,
critical issues facing a new administration, and his views on the Presi-
dency.
This interview could be taped at the White House or in California
on the weekend before the convention begins. We would like it to run a
minimum of 30 minutes.
There have been several discussions over the past year about a
Presidential interview on the NewsHour. This appears to us as an ideal
opportunity for Mr. Reagan to appear on the program in its new format.
I hope we can arrange this, and am ready to meet with you at any time to
discuss it.

The Bureau of Land Management of the Department of
Interior has informed me that it is currently process-
ing applications for the Tehachapi Pass Wind Energy
Project near Mojave. However, there are no develop-
ments planned on public lands within two miles of the
location of your home. Also, the Bureau of Land Man-
agement would not be involved in any activites on
Section 9 and 15 adjacent to your property, as these
lands are private ownership.

opening extravaganza at the National Association
of Broadcasters Annual Convention last week.
Clearly, it added a 'nice touch' to an outstanding
patriotic production. Naturally, we would have
also liked a live teleconference for our closing
session but understand the conflicts posed by the
President's trip to China.
As we discussed, the NAB Board will
be meeting in Washington June 18 through 22 and would
like to have a briefing by the President and/or a
reception at The White House. We can make arrange-
ments to be available anytime during that week but
would prefer a mid-to-late afternoon meeting Monday
through Thursday. Our Board consists of 53 members
who are CEO's or top executives of radio and tele-
vision stations and companies across the country and
national radio/TV networks. With spouses and a small
number of our senior staff we would anticipate no
more than 125 people.
This would afford our Board a superb
opportunity to hear the President's program firsthand.
We greatly appreciate your assistance in this regard.

signature to Canadian Ambassador Allan Gotlieb, thanking
