49 Box 9 - JGR/Change in Presidential Term - Roberts, John G.: Files
SERIES I: Subject File
THE WHITE HOUSE
WASHINGTON
February 28, 1986
Dear Mrs. Muir:
Thank you for your recent letter to the President, and the
belated Christmas card. In your letter you suggested that
Mrs. Reagan consider running for President in 1988. You also
expressed support for a single six-year presidential term or,
alternatively, retention of two four-year terms. Finally, you
indicated your concern over the Libyan situation.
Mrs. Reagan has not expressed any interest in elective office,
though I am certain she appreciates your expression of support.
The President, as you note, has questioned the wisdom of the
Twenty-Second Amendment, which imposes the two-term limitation.
With respect to the Libyan situation, I can only assure you that
the President will act responsibly to protect American interests
and reduce the threat of terrorism.
Thank you for sharing your views with us. We appreciate hearing
from you.
Sincerely,
John G. Roberts

President Ronald Reagan
The White House
Washington, D. E.
Dear President Reagan:
38200€ w
your Christmas card was bought Long before Christmas but I waited to send it until
9 knew where you would be at that time at your ranch or at The White House. s
never did find out 10 I am sending it to The White House with my deepest apology
for the Lateness. Politics kept running through my mind 10 S kept it so 9 could
enclose a comment or two.
What would you think of Nancy for a candidate for President in 1988? She is well
qualified and well liked by the vpters if she dresses modestly. And this time she
would have a good man behind her. Would Mancy consider it? Either Vice President
Bush or Governor Deukmejian would make a good Vice President. Both are Level headed.
On the presidency --- one time you spoke of changing it to 3 terms. That would not
seem advisable because we never know when the Democrats might get in office again.
And we do not want them having three terms. One six/term year would be good or Leave it
as it is, two 4-year terms.
If Nancy does not wish to be a candidate, what would you think of Vice-President
Bush or Gov. Deukmejian as a candidate for President in 1968? 89
end
I teally am quite perturbed at the Lybian situation especially since Russian ships
have started circulating in that area. I appreciate your wanting to make the world
a better place. And so do 9. But it seems to me that is more than we should take
on. It will take centuries for the nations of that hemisphere to change. Give
them enough 48pe and they will hang themselves. Or change. That has solved many
a problem for me. I am a peacemaker. And 9 will walk. away from a figh before it
starts. So let's keep away from a war before it starts
May I add a thought? A good way to keep peace is to abstain from calliing a person
names. 9 believe you called someone a mad manronrthe JV the other night. I realize
how frustrating things can be. You are a great person so as the Hawaiians say,
"Hang in.".
I will be listening to your State of the Union Speech tomorrow night. And it will
be great as they all are.
May I include a birthday wish (75th). May this be the brightest, happy, and most
healthful ever; and many more.
With my warmest regards to you and Nancy
Filled Muix
