Dear Mr. Baker:
I incorporated this Committee a year ago, acting purely out of
belief that the time had come to bring attention to the role of an
escalating public debt in inhibiting economic growth.
Recent events propel me now to seek real support for this group,
which is in no way related to any other organization. Just before
Christmas, the IRS granted tax-exempt status, as an advance
determination. On December 31, 1982, the President announced he would
donate his Social Security pension to help reduce the public debt.
Furthermore, the face cover of IRS Form 1040 contains a paragraph
describing how to make contributions to the Bureau of the Public Debt.
Now that this Committee has gained credibility, I believe all
the more that the credibility of the idea must be promoted.
I have enclosed our initial brochure, and ask that you take a
few minutes to review it and my own background. Finally,

History of The American Way
Membership Drive
Columbus discovered America in 1492, due to his absolute de-
termination to act on his beliefs. Scorned by the knowledgeable
for the Administration of
people of the day, who predicted with confidence that he would
fall off the edge of the world, Columbus succeeded nonetheless.
The pioneers who settled America came by exercise of free will,
the Committee
seeking to build a better life and to fully enjoy the fruits of their
labors-be they great or small. The growth of America was never
subsidized, but sustained by ambition and will-power.
The American way of life came into existence by the end of the

1700's. The principles of the American way of life were best articu-
lated by Thomas Jefferson, author of the Bill of Rights and our
third President. He addressed the nation about several cardinal

principles in his first inaugural address in 1801. First he spoke
about the need for tolerance, even for those who would destroy

with which error of opinion may be tolerated where reason is left

Second, he defined equality and proposed a valid measure of
the worth of one's life: "entertaining a due sense of our equal right
