To that end, the local cable company in Cincinnati, Warner Amex Cable, is giving 24 hours of broadcast time for a live studio telethon dedicated to the Vietnam Veterans of Cincinnati. The purpose of this letter is to ask if it would be possible to arrange to have President Reagan call in to the studio at a pre-arranged hour, to give his best wishes for our success. The brodacast will be held Wednesday August 24 8:00 PM to Thursday August 25 8:00 PM. We would be most desirous having the President's call placed at 8:15 PM on Wednesday August 24, if possible. Naturally, any other time would be acceptable if it would be more convenient to the President's schedule. Chris Loftis is a Duke University Graduate now studying at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in North Carolina. Last. summer he walked 500 miles across the state of North Carolina, singing, playing his guitar, and raising awareness for Church World Service/CROP about the local and global hunger situation. This summer he will be walking through North Caro- lina and Virginia to the District of Columbia, meeting with Govenors Hunt and Robb on his way and calling attention to how one involved person can make a difference. He writes many of his own songs, and has performed them in local North Carolina restaurants, campuses, churches, and CROP Walks for the Hungry. He sang with the late Harry Chapin on two occasions, and shares his celebrated concern and involve- ment on behalf of the world's one billion hungry. Chris can help us a great deal if he can dismantle the notion in people's minds that nothing can be done about hunger. The message of Chris Loftis is that we must work hard to fight poverty and hunger in the world, and that this work must be offered in the spirit of celebration. Chris is one of the few young men today with a vision of a better tomorrow. His message is one of tremendous hope. Church World Service/CROP, the sponsoring agency, is a thirty-five year old relief and self-help development organization of 34 Protestant denominations in the U.S. with projects in over fifty of the world's most poverty-stricken regions. It delivers emergency relief to refugee camps and to victims of natural and man- made disasters, as well as administering food for work, water development, sanitation, literacy, and nutrition development projects in many rural areas of the world where annual per capita income averages no more than $60-80. Over 90¢ of every contributed dollar to CWS is used for on-site programs both in this country and abroad. Dear Mr. President: The greatest disappointment I have experienced during my lifetime was notification by your staff that you will be unable to keynote our 84th Annual National Conven- tion to be held in New Orleans, Louisiana, August 12-19, 1983. I personally feel your refusal to address our delegates was a direct slap to me and the 1.9 million members of our great organization. I am sure you must know, Mr. President, that I have spent my entire year as National Commander-in-Chief of the Veterans of Foreign Wars traveling from one end of this nation to the other speaking, literally, to hundreds of thousands of individuals and always supporting your defense and foreign policies. I must con- sider this as your thanks for such support. Believe me, it hurts and hurts deeply. Again I must remind you that our members have not seen you at one of our National Conventions since our VFW Political Action Committee gave you our support in August 1980. Our membership was hurt by such lack of cooperation. They too, Mr. President, were hurt deeply. Again, as a personal note, Mr. President, during my year as National Commander I feel my own safety was placed in jeopardy by taking time from my busy schedule to visit Central America in order to become better acquainted with that part of a troubled world and to prepare an in-depth report to my membership and to members of the Congress supporting your policies in that particular area. Apparently there are no thanks from your Administration for this endeavor. Finally, Mr. President, I feel I had no choice but to place in writing my disappoint- ment in your decision not to attend our Convention in order to assure there can be no misunderstanding of my position and that of my organization.
