Memorandum
Governor Reagan
Date
: November 14, 1969
Subject: Backgrounder for openin
session of Environmental
Conference, Monday, November 1
at 9:00 a.m., Coconut Grove,
From :
Tom Ellick
Ambassador Hotel, Los Angeles
You will be introduced by Robert H. Gerdes. You know him as Bob.
Gerdes is Chairman of the Board of Pacific Gas and Electric
Company, San Francisco. Gerdes is one of the co-chairmen you
appointed for the Conference.
Others at the platform who you should recognize will be:
Lt. General Victor H. Krulak (USMC Ret.) He is president
of the Copley News Service, San Diego. He is your other
co-chairman of the conference. He likes to be called
General and has met you on several occasions.
Secretary of Interior Walter Hickel
Dennis Day, who will sing the "Star Spangled Banner" and
"This Land Is My Land"
Ike Livermore, Secretary for Resources
Mayor Sam Yorty who will precede you with a "few words"
of greetings. (We have given him 7 minutes)
The Reverend White who will give the invocation
Lt. Governor Ed Reinecke
(Bill Mott will be sitting in the audience. Please recognize
him for his work. He and Ike Livermore are the leaders of
this conference project)
The morning schedule is very tight because of the four concurrent
panels which must begin as closely to 10:00 a.m. as possible. You
are scheduled to go on at 9:20 a.m.
After your speech you are scheduled for a "drop-in" on each of the
four panels: People and Air; People and Water, People and Land,
and People and Urban Society (see attached press release for panel
members)
page 2
These panels will be running concurrently throughout the two-day
conference and are comprised of individuals representing every
degree of shading in the environmental spectrum. Each panel
is being presided over by a very firm moderator.
The press, panel moderators and panel members will all be advised
of your dropping in.
It is suggested that you emphasize -- as you are recognized in
each of the panel rooms -- that you came to listen to the discussions
in these panels as did your staff members who will be covering all
of the events during the full two days. And - as you will have
mentioned in your address - you are looking for creative, workable
solutions to our environmental problems from these panels.
