Allen we VIA: Michael Deaver MEETING: St. Patrick's Day call by Irish Ambassador, Sean Donlon DATE: Tuesday, March 17, 1981 (anytime but 10:00 - 12:00 noon) PURPOSE: To present traditional shamrock to the President on St. Patrick's Day. In addition, to present to Mrs. Reagan a gift of Beeleek porcelain, and the Reagan Irish family tree stitched on linen. FORMAT: The Oval Office Mrs. Reagan 15 minutes CABINET The Vice President PARTICIPATION: SPEECH President's remarks to be prepared by speechwriters MATERIAL: NSC will provide background paper on Ambassador Donlon PRESS Meeting will be announced COVERAGE: Full photo coverage STAFF: Mr. Richard Allen RECOMMENDED: Department of State (see attached request) OPPOSED: None PREVIOUS None PARTICIPATION: BACKGROUND: Originally Prime Minister Haughey had been scheduled to visit the United States at this time, and had been invited to call on the President. The Prime Minister cancelled his trip for domestic political reasons, and requested that Ambassador Donlon be received in his place. It is not anticipated that the meeting would involve substantive discussions. Approve Disapprove Time
