DIRECTIVE NUMBER 40

THE FUTURE POLITICAL STATUS OF
MICRONESIA: NUCLEAR CLAIMS
NSDD-29 is amended as follows:
The Chief Status Negotiator is authorized, at his discretion,
to commit up to an additional $40 million to the Government
of the Marshall Islands on terms and conditions to be negotiated
in the agreement subsidiary to Section 177 of the Compact of
Free Association. This agreement must result in the settlement
of all claims brought by or on behalf of any citizen or national
or the Government of the Marshall Islands against the United
States or its contractors arising from the nuclear testing
program conducted by the United States between 1946 and 1958.
The Chief Status Negotiator is authorized to commit the amounts
herein authorized along the lines of the indicative categories
set forth in NSDD 29 of March 31, 1982, in all other regards,
shall remain in effect.
