Sample of Bone Cortex and Marrow Taken from The Femurs of Mrs Mallifer. These samples were handed to Mr. Viedt and myself by Dr. Martland shortly after November 1, 1925. The total gamma rayactivity was measured on a sample contanning weighing 60.2 grains and expressed in terms of radium equivalent. The actual radium present was determined by the emanation method. Gamma ray measurements of the tube containing 60.2 grams. 11/13 0018 mst 12/4 0010 11/16 0021 IT 12/9 0011 11/18 0014 1f 12/14 0020 11/20 0015 " 12/18 0014 average of .0015 mg. or 2.5 X 10-5 mg per gram. Assuming the total weight of the bone in the body to be 13/16 of that in Leman's body (9800 grams) and that this sample is representative of the total, we calculate the total quantity of radium equivalent contained in the body to be 199 micrograms. The emanation values determined were as follows: 7.45 X 10-° m8. per gram. 7.50 11 11 " 11 7.58 ff 11 " 11 7.61 " 11 11 11 7.50 11 11 !1 11 7.55 " " " 11 average. 13/16 X 9800 X 7.55 X 10-6 gives 60 micragrams of radium element It thus appears that about 30 percent of the totad activity can be ascribed to radium while the balance or 70 percent must be ascribed to mesothorium or radiothorium.
