Dr. Herman Schlundt,
University of Missouri,
Columbia, Mo.
Dear Dr. Schlundt:
We are herewith enclosing copy of telegrams sent
you on May 22nd and 24th, which we trust you have received by this.
I also wish to call your attention to the faot that to date we have
not received a formal bill from you as per the request in my letter
of recent date, covering check for your services. will you kindly
give this natter your attention.
Things are happening so rapidly with regard to the
suits that we hardly know fron one day to the next what will be the
next moye, and are therefore, in rather a chaotic state of mind.
However, at the moment we are working upon a program which we are
hopeful will get this entire matter out of the courts as well as the
press. At the moment we are only hopeful that such can be accomplish
ed, and as soon as we have anything definite I shall take occasion
to advise you.
Mr. Berry seems to have gotten us into a situation
which is rather hard to meet, but we have in mind a program which in
my opinion quite amply covern the ground, and is not an admission that
all the plaintiffs are suffering from the conditions claimed, but
opens the door to definitely ascertain if such claims are warranted.
Further than that it will be the means of a thorough investigation of
this entire field under proper supervision, which we hope will do away
with this unwarranted publicity, and of false statements to the press
and of people apparently seoking personal glory in the situation.
We have carefully guarded against making any statements to the press
ourselves, as we feel that such statements would be taken immediately
to the opponents, they in turn would contradict same and then the
contradiction would come back to us for refuting, and sorion indéfintitely.
We don't believe that we have misjudged this situation - unfortunately
public opinion is so strongly built along the lines that we are nothing
more or less than murderers, that we are confronted with the serious
problem of working out a method of handling this situation, which will of
necessity satisfy the courts interested in the subject, the public's interest
the complainants interested, and Mr. Berry's interest as well as our own.
Any suggestions or ideas that you have along these
lines, please feel entirely free to communicate with us. With kind rega
I am
Very truly yours,
HHBarker :RH
Vice President.
