Mr. H. s. Iryan,

Dear l/r. Bryan:
With reference to the publicity recently given to the
five girls who were suing us for injuries claimed to have been incurred
at the time of their employment at our factory in Orange, during 1917-21,
I may say that this was the method which the Attorney for these girls
chose to try these cases rather than in the courts.
Fortunately for him and unfortunately for us it proved
to be a rather effective method, for he was able through the press to
build public opinion to euch an extent that I believe had we been forced
to & to trial the cases would not hate been settled on their merits, but
upon the notions and idess of the court as well as the jury, obtained as
a result of the wide-spread publicity. Tor this reason we felt it
advisable to settle these cases out of court, in view of the fact that the
complainants agreed to the astablishment of a Medical Board, which would
in time definitely ascortain whether their condition is a result of
having teen employed by us.
Te are confident that our attitude of not thrashing these
cases out in the press was a wise one, for had we attempted to supply t)
press with information it would hate been a continuous rangle between
the complainants and ourselves, whichwould have benefited noither one
By the settlement of the cases we feel that the publicity will of neer
cease much sooner than it would have had the cases been continued in
As it is now news is scarce with regard to these cases, but had the
dragged on in court for a matter of one or two years. there would h
always been new news overy time the matter was up for a hearing..
At the moment tre believe it best to make no predic
or statements regarding our opinions as the condition of these girls
to leave the matter rest until such time as the alove referred to Medical
Board has had an opportunity to examine the girls and report tleir findings,
which of course, we as well as the complainants must accept as final.
I trust that this information will serve to cl
rather puzzled state of mind regarding all of the publicity
occured.
Very truly yours,
HHBarker: RH
