August 15th,1928. Dr. Elizabeth B. Bricker, Chief,Hygiene and Sanitation Section, Department of Labor and Industry, Harrisburg,Pa. Dear Dr. Bricker: Your letter of August 9th is at hand, and I shall endeavor to answer same in the abgence of Mr. Lee. We are aware that the Hamilton Watch Company, have had their employees examined by Dr. Froderick B. Flinn of the College of Physicians and Surgeons,New York City, whom we consider one of the best versed men in this field. Dr. Flinn has had more experience with these cases than any other individual, and is a man who is very thorough, and leaves no stone unturned for the full protection of the employees. lle have encouraged all of our clients tho use any appreciable amount of material to have their employees examined at frequant intervals, as we believe by such examinations the possibility of a hasard in this industry may be precluded. While it is true that our material is made in different degrees of luminosity, depending upon the amount of radio- active constituints present, still we do not advise our clientsas to the amount of radiom in our compounds, which may vary from timo to time, nor would we feel justified in giving you the exact quantities in the various grades, for we consider this information strictly confidential. Then again a value which we would give you at this time would not have applied in the past, and might not apply in the future. Te are glad, however, to advise that our different grades of Undark contain between one to 10 milligrams of radium element per 100 grams of bulk. The average containing in the neighborhood of 3 milligrans of radium per 100 grams of bulk. We feel that this informa- tion should be sufficient to give you a pretty good insight as to the amount of radium which girls, engaged in the application of this material, handle. Due to our close contact with our customers we have never felt it necessary to send out any printed precautions, as we have at frequent intervals discussed this matter with our clients, and given our ideas on the subject.
