In deriving the values for the gamma ray activity the constant 0.000086 (8.6 x 10-5)
was used. This factor represents the drift produced in living persons by the presence
of one microgram radium (element).
The experimental data for each subject are present in tabular form on attached sheets.
For comparison the Newark data are placed side by side with the New York data.
These results stand in direct contrast to the observations at Newark, and at the
present time we can offer no explanation for this discrepancy. This problem is a
baffling one. So far it remains a mystery.
It should also be pointed out that the high quantity of radon in the expired air
stands in marked contrast to the results obtained in the expired air tests made by
Barker on Miss Dunn and thosemade by Flinn and the writer on Mrs. Dumschott.
In this
connection we hope that an effort will be made to get further experimental data on the
free emanating power of radium contained in living persons.
Since our experiments do not distinguish between Radon, which may be present in
subject by ingestion of the gasitself, and radon continually produced by radium present,
it becomes very important to conduct experiments which will determine the quantity of
radium which is being eliminated in the excreta of the subject, urcarried in the
blood stream
Experiments of this kind, hospitalization of two subjects, Miss Freyer and Mrs.
Hussman, therefore seems to be the next logical step in an attempt to solve some of
the perplexing anomalies, and discrepancies which now face us.
The experimental data for each subject follow. The letter F signifies readings
made by Dr. Flinn; S, readings taken by Schlundt. N.D. stands for natural drift, i.e.
no one in the chair.
Respectfully submitted
Herman Shlundt
