Dear Dr. Stoll:=
The writer had a talk yesterday wil th Messrs. Lee and Barber of
the United States Radium Corp. who have had a great deal of experience
with radium poisoning.
I read them the statement from your letter that "it is the radium
laden air that is inhaled rather than the small amount on the brush that
causes
the
trouble". They feel certain that this does not maintain
where the application is done by brush. They state that radium is free
emanating and produces a gas known as radon, but that when radium is
combined with a gas absorbing material, such as zine sulphite which is
used in the production of radium luminous paint, the percentage of gas
thrown off is so infinitestinal that it is impossible to become affected
by it. They do state that if dials were dusted it would be possible for
the air to become dust laden, in which case the material could be taken in
through the air.
They also advise that there has never yet been a case of illness
from radium poisoning where the presence of radium could not be proven by
the electroscope test and that all serious cases had revealed at least 60
to 100 micrograms. Furthermore the electroscope will detect as small as two
micrograms and no positive action at all has been found in the electroscope
test on the girls employed by us, or on Miss Dube in particular. As a matter
