H. Barker,\n535 Pearl Street,\nNew York City, New York.\nDear Mr. Barker:\nAm enclosing, herewith, clipping which is self ex-\nplanatory. Am also enclosing a photostat copy of retraction\nthree years ago, which is self explanatory.\nI went over to the editor and had a talk with him\nin reference to this continued publicity of untruth and the\ndamage it was doing, as I have already done with the Tribune.\nIn both cases they state these stories originate with their New\nYork correspondent, who is there on the ground and of course\nthey took it forgranted that he knew the situation thoroughly\nbefore writing.\nIt seems to me that if an effort were made by your\nfirm to straighten out the situation by getting it clear in the\nminds of these reporters, that whatever happens radium is not to\nblame, that it would help materially in clearing up this situa-\ntion and set us right in the minds of the general public.\nI am frank to confess that our business has been\npractically ruined, as a result of this publicity. However,\nwith the hope that there would be no more unfavorable publicity,\nand that the charges against radium, of itself, would be rem\nfuted by you, we have continued on in business and taken our\nloses. We felt that eventually we would win financially and\nthat we were really rendering a humanitarian service, but to date\nwe have been disappointed in that we have failed to find one word\npublished by you or anyother Radium concern denying the charges\nor any explanation whatever, that would help to set the matter\nright in the minds of the general public.\nIt scems that if the writers in general knew posi-\ntively that radium could not legitimately be blamed for this\ncondition, they would be rather hesitant in continuing to write\nputting the full blame on radium.
