TREASURY DEPARTMENT JEI/EMW UNITED STATES PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICE OFFICE OF FEB 281929 INDUSTRIAL HYGIENE WASHINGTON, D. C. AND SANITATION Room 1-123, "C" Bldg. 16 Seventh St. S. W. Feb. 27, 1929 Mr. Howard H. Barker, Vice President, United States Radium Corporation, 535 Pearl St. New York, N. Y. Dear Mr. Barker: Professor Schlundt of the University of Missouri says that the U. S. Radium Corporation is importing a walf bifilar electroscope of the Hess type and he thought that you would be willing to let us have the use of this instrument until we could obtain one. As you know, we are about to start on a study of the effects of radium upon those who work in the watch dial industry and we are anxious to get our instruments together as quickly as possible. You may know I have just returned from spend- ing three weeks with Prof. Lind and Prof. Erikson of the University of Minneapolis, While there I saw one of the Wulf bifilar electroscopes in use by Dr. Stenstrom of the University Hospital, and I was very much impressed by it. If it is possible for you to lend us your in- strument until we get our own, it will be very greatly appreciated. We would, of course, either return your in- strument, or send you a new one when we receive it, whichever you prefer. sincerely yours, fames E lies (James E. Ives) Physicist, U. S. P. H. S.
