Dr. J. E. Gendreau,
Institute of Radium,
4120 Ontario St.,
East "ontreal,
Canada.
Dear Dr. Gendreau:
We have received a request from a Mr. J.O.Morin,
of 211 Grenier Ave., Nontreal, for information pretaining to the
conditions which have beon found to exist anong certain people that
have at one tiue applied luminous caterial to watch and clock dials
etc. We are enclosing herewith a copy of our reply to Mr. Morin,
and are taking occasion to write and advise you directly as to the
request made in his letter, inassuch as we have no record of such a
gent/Lemen and know nothing of his connections or interest in the case.
While thore are a number of physicians in the Metro-
politan area who have examined girls that at one time applied luminous
material to dials, still the number who have made careful and exhaustive
study of this subject are small. Dr. Martland, Essex County physic-
ian, was probably one of the first to make quite an exhaustive study of
the subject, but due to his official capacity as Falsex County Physician,
I understand that he is not interested in any current cases at the time.
Dr. L. F. Craver, Examining Physician at llemorial Hospital, is prowably
besit qualified to give you the type of information which you desire, and
I
an confident that you will find Dr. Craver quite willing to cooperate
with you in this regard. His address at the Hospital is - Memorial
Hospital, 2 West 106th St., New York Gity., and his private office
address is - 121 East 60th St., New York City.
You have doubtless seon a good deal of publicity which
has been iven to this subject, whish for the most part, ha you may
realize, has been exaggerated, but at the same time it is quite apparent
that such girls who followed the practice of tipping the brush with
their lips, thereby introducing continuously small amounts of radioactive
materials, incorporated with the base of the luminous material, into their
systems, has subjected themselves to an industrial hasard hitherto un-
suspected. Todate there has not been a single case found, so far as we
know, that is suffering as a result of their employment in this industry,
where they did not tip or point the brushes with their lips.
If we can be of further service to you please do not
hesitate to communicate with us.
Very truly yours,
HHBarker:RI
Vice President.
