UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA SCHOOL OF CHEMISTRY MINNEAPOLIS December 8, 1930 OFFICE OF THE DEAN Mr. H. H. Barker, Vice President United States Radium Corporation 535 Pearl Street DEC 16 1930 New York City Dear Barker: I enclose herewith a confirmation of a day letter sent to you this morning. I am sure that Dr. Moore would appreciate your consulting Dr. Craver on his behalf. As I wired you, the decompression operation was performed two weeks ago today on November 24, and has been quite successful. He was at once restored to consciousness by relief of pressure, and has improved steadily since then. Some paralysis had developed on the left side, but he is able to walk unsteadily, although he is still quite weak. The tumor was not disturbed at all, although a piece of skull was, as you suggest, permanently removed. The question to be decided now, is whether he should have a first treatment of X-rays,extending over about four days, at Rochester, and poss- ibly have later two treatments (with six weeks duration between each) by radium at some place where a larger amount is commanded. I have felt that New York would be preferable on account of the large gamma ray dose that they command. It seems that a great deal depends on the first radiation. That the first #f jolt" is very important, and that any inadequacy at this point can- not well be compensated by later radiation. That is why I would like for Dr. Moore to have the best possible advice at this junction. I fear this letter may be too late to help in that regard, but believe my wire gave you the most necessary information. Dr. Moore could make the trip to New York now, although it would be quite difficult, as he tires easily. His brain reactions seem fair. His speech is somewhat retarded, but his fighting spirit remains the same as ever. The doctors at Rochester have good hope of beneficiation by radiation, but they give him, at best, only a few years, and are unable to predict what his condition during that time will be. We can only hope for the best after everything possible has been done. Cordially yours, S. C. find. S. C. Lind, Director. SCL:EN Enc. 1 Conisc sent to Dr. Schlundt. and President Elliott.
