DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY
March 17th, 1931.
Mr. Barker - 2
the same amount of each of the samples of the five series.
Later on I figured out, on the basis of Flinn and Seidlin's
work that an elimination of 50% of the radium present over a
period of 50 to 100 days would demand an elimination rate
about a hundredfold that of the normal everyday rate. I
was, therefore, under some suspense from day to day waiting
for a big surprise, but so far I have found no samples which
are seriously contaminating our instruments. I think we shall
probably pass through the entire series of some 40 to 50
samples without requesting you to send us new chambers,
and giving as our reason that the chambers now in use have
been accidentally over-taxed by radium emanation from the
patients under investigation.
Are you making plans to attend the Indiana-
polis meeting of the American Chemical Society? I hope that
your Company will feel prosperous enough to have you come
as a delegate. I expect to attend and to run up to Lafayette
for a hours. In fact, I have already received an invita-
tion from Mrs. Moore to spend a week-end with her either be-
fore or after the meeting. Dr. Lind has also been invited and
so we expect to have a party. Why not come and join us?
I must tell you that Mr. Carroll who has kept
the records of the readings on the last tube of radium which
we sent can not find his notes, but he has in process now
some more of the same lot of material and he will be sure to
keep a record of the next tube that comes out and this will
serve your purposes equally well.
With very good wishes, I remain,
Sincerely yours,
Herman Schlun df
Herman Schlundt.
