Dear Dr. . Craver:
Enclosed are three data sheets giving in
condensed form, the amounts of radium eliminated by three
of the girls under experiment. I have added on the sheets
of Miss Fryer and Mrs. Hussman the figures for radium eli-
mination in February 19-26, 1929. The data are shown by
curves on two other sheets of co-ordinate paper, also en-
closed.
These results will be subject to slight de-
ductions representing blanks for the reagents used in bring-
ing the residues into solution; but these corrections will
be small and will be the same for the three subjects.
May I ask whether or not Miss Fryer in Series
IV collected feces for a four-day period? The tube contain-
ing the residue was marked January 5-9. If it was for only
three days, then the total radium eliminated per day takes
the larger value 1831 n ME. instead of 1381.
I may add one computation which is of funda-
nental importance. Supposing Miss Fryer had eliminated ra-
dium at the rate of 1640 a ug. per day for three nonths==90
days=wshe would then, during this period have lost but 0.15
mierograns of radium. Sinee her radium content lies in the
neighborhood of 20 ME., you will note that with her best re-
cord it would take her about a year and eight months to eli-
minate one microgram of radium.
The drugs administered do not appear to have
the expected potency :
The results, however, do not surprise me. In
order to secure an elimination of one half of the radium, 10
mierograms, from Miss Fryer in 90 days, the quantity of radium
excreted daily should run up to an average of 110,000 micro-
micrograms; but the maximum found was only 1,640 mioromiorograms.
