UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI COLUMBIA DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY August 29, 1931 Mr. H. H. Barker U. S. Radium Corporation AUG 311931 535 Pearl St. New York City My dear Barker: I made a trip to Rolla on Thursday and left there a sample of about 20 to 30 pounds of low grade carnotite. This sample was Some that was left over from the experiments which you conducted here in 1920-22, This sample of ore is to be used for a preliminary run on the concentration of the values by a new method of flotation which has been developed in the U. S. Bureau of Mines Experiment Station at Rolla. If these results look at all encouraging it is quite probable that the U. S. Bureau of Mines stationedat Rolla will cooperate in making a careful study of the methods of consentrating the values in low grade carnotite ores. After my return from Buffalo I shall call up the director, Mr. Coghill, for they expect to do this preliminary experiment right soon. I am today sending him another sample of ore which seems to be of somewhat different character, at least its physical properties such as color etc. are different from the first sample. I also had a talk with Professor Hanley, Professor of Metallurgy, and he seems to think that Dr. H. W. Gillette, who at one time was with the Bureau of Mines and later Editor of the new Journal "Metals and Alloys", would be a very good authority on gold alloys. His address as given in the directory of mining engineers is 505 King Avenue, Battell Institute, Columbus, Ohio. If I recall correctly, he was appointed director of the Institute but has resigned. I a.m not quite sure whether he is the present director or whether he resigned.
