DEPARTMENT OF PATHOLOGY
CORNELL UNIVERSITY MEDICAL COLLEGE
FIRST AVENUE AND 28TH STREET
Mr. H.H. Barker
NEW YORK
Copy of letter sent to
February 10, 1932.
Miss Larice, Miss Fryer, Miss Shaub and
Mrs. Hus sman.
During the past year bills for medical and
other services for the radium patients of the U. S.
Radium Corporation have increased in number and size and
have become rather miscellaneous in character. Many of
the expenses have not been authorized by the Commission,
and some of them seem to us not proper medical charges.
For these reasons and because of the present very depressed
state of business the Commission feels that they must
scrutinize expenses more carefully and urge upon our
patients the necessity of practising economy as far as
possible.
We cannot approve of routine visits at a cost
of $10.00 to $25.00 by physicians in Cases in which the
condition of the patient does not vary much from month
to month. We think these medical visits should be requested
only for some definite reason.
The services of visiting nurses, while probably
desirable and agreeable seem to us to fall, not in the class
of necessary medical services, but rather in the class of
personal attentions. The use of expensive tonice and
medicines, we do not feel are useful or desirable, unless
the patient is suffering from definite enemin. X-ray
photographs should be requested only for definite reasons,
approved by the Commission.
For these reasons we wish to inform you that on
and after February 15th, 1932, no bills will be approved
by the Commission for any services which have not been
specifically approved for the Commission by Dr. Lloyd F.
Craver. Dr. Craver onn be reached any morning at the
Memorial Hospital, telephone Academy a - 6140.
We do not wish to indicate by this note that any
worthwhile medical attention or service of any kind will be
withdrawn. On the contrary, we propose to do everything
possible for the benefit of our patients. We therefore
ask your co-operation in the effort to do justice to
all parties concerned.
Sincerely yours,
Januy James Ewing.
