Dr. Herman Schlundt,
University of Bissouri,
Columbia, Mo.
Dear Dr. Schlundt:
We have your letter of April lst, relative to
the Byers case which has received so much publicity during the past
few days.
For your information I may aay that Mr. Byers was
a sportsman in every sense of the word, and consumed large quantities
of Bailey's Radithor, on the theory that it had all the rejuvenating
properties which Balley claimed for same. While I don't know the
exact amount which he consumed, still I beliove I am correct in stating
that it was from three to five milligrams. As a matter of fact
he
became so enthusiastic over the properties of this material that he
bought some for some of his girl friends, one of whon died last Fall
with a bad case of necrosis of the jaw, ascribable to radium poisoning.
The case is one of which we have had knowledge for the past year and
a half, and it was only a matter of question as to how long he would
live.
Probably from such incidents as this some good comes,
but I am inclined to believe that it only gives a few of our friends
an opportunity to bring their contentions before the public view, hoping
to gain some favorable publicity.
There is not nuch more that I can say about this
case.
Sincerely yours,
Vice President.
