Dr. Herman Schlundt,
University of Missouri,
Columbia, Mo.
Dear Dr. Schlundt:
On Thursday of last week, Mr. J. P. Remen-
synder of the Hayden Chemical Corporation called at our office
for some technical information, which I believe you are better
qualified to give than we are.
I will endeavor to give you some idea of what he
desires so that in case he writes you you will be able to properly
advise.
It seems that they are manufacturing 8. colloidal
thorium compound for contrast work in taking x-ray photographs of
the system. They are endeavoring to have this preparation listed
in New and Non-Official Remedies, and are being questioned by the
Council relative to any deleterious effects that may result from
the radiation that might arise from the compound. As I under-
stand their method of preparation it involves the use of a pure
thorium nitrate to start with, and the question raised by the
Council is regarding the amount of thorium B and thorium D which
may be present in their preparation.
Mr. Remensnyder asked if we were prepared to
determine the quantities of these two elements in this prepara-
tion. I advised that we were not, and I questioned whether the
quantities were sufficient that they could be determined in the
event that his thorium nitrate was pure.
It strikes me that what these people. are in need
of is theoretical advice and a few computations relative to the
various amounts of members of the thorium series which may be in
their preparation, together with assurance that the thorium nitrate
which they start with contains no mesothorium or its derivatives.
Mr. Remensnyder inquiried as to what I thought
you might charge them for your ces, and I told him that I had
no idea, but he seemed rather insistent that he have some idea as
to what your fee might be before writing to you - I therefore,
suggested that I knew you were reasonable in your charges, and the
fee for such work, if not too complicated, would probably be in
the neighborhood of $50 to $100. I presume that you will hear
from these people in due course, and trust that you will be able
to give them the information desired.
Sincerely yours,
