Mr. H. H. Barker
346 Richmond Avenue
South Orange, New Jersey
My dear Barker:
I thought it would interest you to hear
about one of the tests we made while we were at El-
gin late in June. Mr. Armstrong was kind enough to
bring out Mr. Rapp of Evanston; you will remember
Mr. Rapp as the young man listed as Case No. 9 in
our report of the work we did in Dr. John's office
two years ago. Mr. Rapp at that time had a total
activity which we reported between 10 and 18 micro-
grams. This second measurement showed no decrease
in astivity and when we questioned Mr. Rapp, he
stated very positively that he had not had any radium
treatments since the time you and I made our measure-
ments. His case is thus an outstanding one of reten-
tion of radium, marked by great permanence. None of
the patients in Elgin showed any such high degree of
retention.
Since our visit to Elgin we have had
some correspondence with Mr. Arnstrong regarding Mr.
Rapp's case, and he has taken pains to find out about
the possibility of his having obtained radium inter -
nally through the drinking of mineral water. Mr.
Armstrong sent us a sample of the mineral water Mr.
Rapp has been taking for some time. We tested this
very faithfully and found no trace of activity.
We are thus somewhat puzzled about the
outcome. I may say that I have gone over our old
record which we made and Mr. Morris and I have gone
over the recent record; and we are quite sure that
this is not an accidental mistake in measurements
for all measurements were made twice, so we have
checks on both gamma ray and expired air measurements.
Sincerely yours,
Herman Schlendt
Herman Schlundt.
