FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION
WASHINGTON, D.C.
U. S. Radium Corporation,
FEB 28 1933
535 Pearl Street,
New York, N. Y.
Gentlemen:
Dr. James F. Ives of the Bureau of the Public Health Service
has advised me that through the courtesy of Mr. H. H. Barker, you
loaned him a Wulf bifilar electroscope as modified by Hess. The
instrument is manufactured by Günther and Tegetmeyer, Braunshweig,
Germany.
In connection with the enforcement of the Federal food and
drugs act, we frequently examine various commercial drug products
to determine their content of radioactivity. We are fairly well
equipped for this work, but feel the need of a gamma ray electro-
scope which has a greater sensitivity than those described in the
usual catalogs of chemical apparatus. We think it likely that
the Wulf-Hess electroscope would suit our purpose, but we would
like to know more about it before we order it.
We shall appreciate your advising us of your experience
with it, particularly as to whether or not it is a dependable,
sensitive instrument and whether it is still being manufactured.
If the instrument has been further modified, we would of course
want to obtain the latest modification.
Very truly yours,
fustal
