COPY LLOYD F. CRAVER, M.D. 135 Bay Front Drive Baldwin, L.I. August 5, 1933. Dr. James Ewing, Memorial Hospital, New York. Dear Doctor Ewing, On Wednesday I saw Miss Freyer at the Homeopathic Hospital in Orange. had She had severe pain in her right leg for about two months. In the right femoral triangle, I could feel swelling about 10 to 12 in. in diameter. I could not examine it in detail because the whole extremity was encased in a spica cast. At the hospital I saw films made through the cast, and at Dr. Hemphries' office I saw others that had been made before the cast was applied. There is no evidence of fracture of the femur or of the bone tumor in these films, yet the pain and swelling suggested either a fracture with angulation or a bulky tumor. I am afraid that she has some very cellular tumor, such as Mrs. McDonald had, that does not produce changes in the bone that are visible roentgenologically. She seems fairly well nourished but looks pale, and has been receiving some morphine. Evidently the fracture to which Dr. Humphries referred was one of the right 11th rib. Drl Humphries said she did not know about it, so I didn't make any reference to it. It does not seem to be causing any symptoms, nor could I see in the structure of that rib in the X-rays made a month ago any evidence of tumor or of marked radiation changes in the rib that would explain the fracture. She is in a private room, such as in New York would cost about $8.00 a day. Under the circumstances there seems to be nothing to do but let her remain there. She said Dr. Humphries told her he would remove the cast in a few days. My only communication with Dr. Humphries was by telephone, as he is on his vacation, but was at his residence. - 2 - It is annoying that she did not consult us when the pain persisted, or at least when the swelling appeared in her thigh. She would not listen to a suggestion of X-ray treatment. I did not tell her that I thought she had a tumor. When I was arranging with Dr. Humphries to go there to see her, I asked him if she had a tumor. He mentioned the swelling but I didn't gather that it had much significance to him. Frankly I think he is trying to hang on to all these cases for all there is in it, but what can we do? My impacted third molar was taken out very skilfully yesterday by Dr. Dunning, and I have had practically no after effects; much better than I expected. Sincerely, Lloyd F. Craver (Signed)
