Mr. H. H. Barker
U. S. Radium Corporation
535 Pearl Street
New York City
Dear Mr. Barker,
Your inquiry of the 11th has just come to hand and
presents a very serious problem for me. During the past
four or five years I have been obliged to forego the op-
portunity of attending the fall meeting of the American
Chemical Society because the opening week of the Univer-
sity has fallen in the week of the meetings of the Society.
Since I have some important duties to perform in connection
with registration I have been obliged to stay here. This
year the University opens the week of September 10th, con-
sequently I am again deprived of attending the fall meeting
of the Society. In fact I do not see how I can arrange to
be away at all during the first week or two of the semester.
I greatly regret this for I want to be of service to you
if I can possibly do so.
This fall I have a very special reason for being here
at the University on duty at the time of opening of the
fall semester. The College of Arts and Science has decided
to offer an entirely new course in physical science entitled
"Matter and Energy". It has been assigned to me by special
request of the dean. The fact is we are introducing a de-
parture in the offerings for one type of student, and you
will see that it becomes quite necessary for me to be on the
scene here just at the time when the La Porte case has been
set.
In view of these circumstances I hesitate in even asking
the dean or the president to be excused from duty at the
opening of the semester. However, I shall try to see the
dean and the president some time during the summer. Both of
these gentlemen are at present seriously ill and are not in
Columbia. They are both in St. Louis in hospitals, and will
probably not return to Columbia for two or three weeks.
Would it serve your purpose if I were to make a deposi-
tion covering my testimony I realize, of course, that this
would not suit your purpose as well, but I hope you realize
