UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY MINNEAPOLIS SCHOOL OF CHEMISTRY OFFICE OF THE DEAN March 24, 1938 Mr. C. B. Lee, President United States Radium Corporation 535 Pearl Street New York, New York Dear Mr. Lee: Upon the receipt of your letter of March 21, I was very much shocked to learn of my friend Barker' S serious con- dition. He was out here last fall and spent an evening at our house. He looked quite well and I do not remember that he com- plained of any lung trouble. It is very tragic that he cannot be told his exact condition, but I suppose it would do no good and make it harder for him. He will certainly be a great loss to your Company. I am glad to give you any aid possible in filling his place. During the ten years I have been at Minnesota I have trained several young men in the field of radium. Most of them are not following it now and have good positions elsewhere. There is one young man, however, who, I believe, can fill your bill exactly: Dr. Charles S. Copeland who took his Ph.D. degree here in 1937 with a major in Physical Chemistry, a thesis under my direction, and a minor in Physics. He worked with radium, radium emanation, electro- scopes, and Geiger counters. Of course, he would not be trained exactly in your line of work, but he has all of the basic foundation which would enable him to be trained into it very rapidly. He also has all of the personal qualifications I think you would like. He did his undergraduate work at the University of Wisconsin before coming here. He was an assistant here for four years and an instructor for two years. This year he is filling a vacancy at the University of Southern California. Copeland is not only a bright, wide awake, likeable fellow, but I believe he has the business qualifications which would make him increasingly valuable to you so he might ultimately fill as important a position as Barker occupied. Dr. Copeland was born at Rockford, Illinois, August 9, 1908; is gentile, has a fine disposition, and is very energetic, active,
