ItO,s fitting that we have this discussion about discovery and exploration
here in the East Room. This is where Thomas Jefferson and Meriwether
Lewis planned the Lewis and Clark expedition to explore parts of America
no one had ever seen, and find an ocean that no one thought could be
reached by land .ASTRONAUTS (
Before we open it up to questions, I want to mention a couple important
initiatives that relate to the subject at hand.
One of the people I know who wanted to be here today is Vice President
Gore who has been such a leader in expanding the frontiers of science and
technology. Earlier today, the Vice President talked about the findings
of a new report released this morning by the US Global Change Research
Program. That report was prepared by some of Americal, leading scientists
and is the first of its kind. It was three years in the making and is the
most detailed look ever at the potential impact of climate change on our
people and our economy.
It projects serious consequences *average temperature increases of 5 to 10
degrees over the next centuryD*increases in both flooding and drought the
loss of fragile ecosystems. It is perhaps the most compelling scientific
evidence we have ever had of global warming. And it lends further
scientific support to addressing global climate change both at home and
abroad *to doing all we can to reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions and
develop clean air technologies.
Sotul *not only decode the human genome and find cures for various kinds of
cancer, parkinsoný, S, alzheimer1,s, diabetes; we would also find out what ,
in the black holes of the universe and what ,s in the depths of our oceans
and what we find out may save hundreds of thousands of peopleý (
