Dear Mr. Reed:
This past month marked the third anniversary of the CAMPAIGN FOR TOBACCO-
FREE KIDS.
We began in September 1995 as an ad hoc project to support the FDA's assertion of
jurisdiction over tobacco, and have since gone on to become a sustainable enterprise
and a full-scale combatant in the tobacco wars.
The past three years of tobacco control in America have been tumultuous, with
numerous ups and downs, and plenty of action.
While youth and adult tobacco use remains our nation's largest preventable cause of
disease and death, we nonetheless have reason for optimism. There has been much
progress.
Working together, the public health community, policy makers and the American
people -- including our country's youth will find the way to defeat this problem, and to
create a healthier society for generations to come.
As we reflect on the challenges, the action and the satisfactions of the past three years,
we are grateful to you and to all others who are fighting the good fight.
Enclosed is a small memento of our anniversary. We look forward to the next three
years of battle and achievement, and to continuing to work with you.
Regards,
Bill
