Memorandum To: Andrea From: Margy Date: 05/02/00 Re: Dead Beat Parent Organization The Dead Beat Parent Organization web site is located on free site space and has links to a number of affiliated sites. The sites all mention the March on Washington scheduled for May 14 from 12 noon to 3 PM at the "White House" and do not refer to the Million Moms March directly. One site suggests that the March is to "get the child support laws changed and enforced". One site calls for petitions that marchers will take to Washington. The petition is not on the site, but can be requested by email. The point of the petitions seems to be to request changes in child support laws at federal and state levels. (The sites do not specify the changes necessary, except for a reference to making "it a felony for dead beats at the state levels".) Another affiliated site calls for letters with 'stories' to be sent to the White House (by certified mail, return receipt requested): "Imagine the President getting swarmed with all this mail, from parents all over the world, who can not get their child support payments! I know if we all would do this at the same time, he would have to look into the situation a little more closely." Some sites refer to the week of May14 as "Dead Beat Parents Awareness Week". Another site requests letters to "the President, 1st Lady, Vice President Gore, Mrs. Gore, the Govenor [sic] of your State, the Attorney General of your State, your State Senators and Congressmen, etc..." The various linked sites are pretty hard on 'dead beat' parents, and one says "the courts, judges, domestic relations, congressmen, mayors, do not care about your children. Say they do but they don't." 1
