Dear Mrs. Clinton:
Over the past decade I have photographed some of the world's great peacemakers for a
book entitled Architects of Peace, to be published by New World Library in the fall of 2000.
Earlier, we sent a sampler showing the book's format and featuring Marian Wright Edelman, the
Dalai Lama, Jimmy Carter, Mother Teresa, César Chavez, and Mikhail Gorbachev, along with a
list of participants. We strongly feel that the book will be incomplete without your
participation, if possible, in conjunction with the president. Our goal is to bring seventy-five of
the world's great peacemakers - activists, politicians, artists, writers, and spiritual leaders — -
together under one cover, and through their images and personal essays convey how diversity of
culture and opinion can be united through a central goal of peace.
We envision this book as a showcase not for individuals but for their ideas — a forum to
speak about the most important issues facing humanity in the coming millennium. We see
Architects of Peace as both a work of art and an educational tool that will transcend political
divisions and inspire a wide audience through the examples and words of both exalted and
unknown peacemakers.
Participation in the book would entail a very short session to take the portrait photograph
and the completion of a short statement on your vision of peace. This essay can be taken from
existing writing, but we hope participants will use the book to present, through an original essay
or an unpublished speech, what they most want the world to hear. We plan to accompany the
book's publication with an international university gallery and museum tour.
We can travel wherever needed for the photo session. We hope you agree that this is a
