I had no idea we had crossed paths before and apologize for my moment of
forgetfulness. I always remember that Echoing Green Conference, because
Ed Cohen set me up to follow a remarkable performer that, if you recall,
gave a song, dance, and oratory recital. All I could think of was what a
challenge it was going to be to follow this Broadway performer with a talk
for which I had only prepared some sketchy notes - - as Ed said, nothing
special, very informal (!).

It was wonderful to see you last week. Thank you for the lunch. I truly
appreciate the time and interest you have taken in advising us about Link.
Your suggestions were very helpful, and I look forward to following up
with the contacts you provided.
As you know, our goal is to launch this concept through a one-year pilot
program, which will work with community-based nonprofit
organizations and academic institutions in three metropolitan areas -
Seattle, the Bay Area, and New York City. In addition, the pilot will
include research projects from a select group of national nonprofit and
advocacy organizations.
Link has moved ahead in fund-raising and setting up the pilot sites. We
are now in the process of identifying and contacting national
organizations to post research projects. Your suggestions will be an
excellent base from which to develop a pool of potential national pilot
participants.
I will keep you posted on our progress in the next several months as we
develop and implement the pilot. Good luck in your work - it sounds
exciting. I look forward to seeing you again soon.

Thanks so much for sending along your monograph, which I had not in fact seen and am very glad to
have now. It offers a terrifically integrative perspective on all the streams of service, federally funded
and in civil society, is nicely situated in a comprehensive view of what has been going on in service
over the last decade (and longer), and presents the most precise overview of policy issues and some of
the most creative new policy proposals I've seen. No wonder they hired you!
Thanks also for the suggestion about Chris Edley. Although I wrote him once in late 1997 about
Service Learning and the President's Race Relations Initiative, I did not send him the position paper
once I'd finished it in 1998. So, I appreciate the suggestion and have now sent it off to him. We shall
see what happens.
I do hope you'll keep me posted if there is anything I can do for you and your office concerning these
matters of mutual interest.
Best of luck with your important and pressing work there, especially as reauthorization efforts get
fully under way on the hill.
