Teresa Smith, age 16
Charlotte, North Carolina
Teresa is involved in the Teen Court program, an alternative to Juvenile Court for
defendants ages 9-18 administered by the non-profit organization Re-Entry. In Teen
Court, defendants who have committed first-time misdemeanors stand trial in a court
of their peers and receive constructive sentences. Punishments are tailored on a
case-by-case basis. For National Youth Service Day, with the help of Sears, Roebuck
& Co., Teresa is organizing a Teen Court Open House and a Mock Trial for the Capital
Area Teen Court. Her goal is to recruit three new volunteers for Teen Court from
every middle and high school in Wake County on National Youth Service Day alone.
Ahmad Goree, age 17
Dallas, Texas
At the age of 13, Ahmad, a member of Allied Youth, began visiting elementary schools
to share his message about the dangers of drugs. For National Youth Service Day,
Ahmad will lead his fellow H. Grady Spruce High School students in an intensive
service project called "Stop the Violence: Gang Intervention." For four days, students
will participate in forums and workshops on the dangers of gang violence and how not
to get involved. On the last day, a rally will be held for the entire student population.

Torria Wynn, age 34
Detroit, Michigan
Torria is the Program Director of Nonviolence KOPS (Nonviolence Kids,
Organizations, Parents, and Schools). KOPS uses Martin Luther King nonviolence
techniques to reduce the level of crime and violence in seven of Detroit's elementary

and middle schools, and enrolls AmeriCorps members to teach conflict resolution and
mentoring to more than 3,000 middle school students each year. A former
AmeriCorps member herself, Torria dislocated a shoulder and broke her collarbone
intervening in a fight at a Detroit public middle school. Over National Youth Service
Day weekend, Torria's group HYPE, a multi-ethnic program which trains teens how to
stay away from violent situations, will/host a "Safe Night Lock-In" for 300 children at
Beard, Southwest Detroit's oldest elementary school. The following morning, the
children will build and dedicate a Peace Garden at the school.
Jason Kai Tung, age 17
Houston, Texas
A senior at Houston's Bellaire Senior High School, Jason is the Park Project Chair for
the Kids' Way Youth Advisory Committee of the United Way. Earlier this year, Jason
was a semi-finalist In the NBA's TeamUp All-Star 2000 Awards, where he won a grant
to help implement his National Youth Service Day Project. With the aid of the Office of
the Western Fifth Ward, Jason and Kids' Way will revitalize and refurbish Semmes
Park. Over 40 participants will remove trash, replant flower beds, assemble and
secure picnic tables, and paint the park's outdoor theater.

Javier Arias, age 20
Los Angeles, California
The Los Angeles Rapid Response Corps is the only AmeriCorps team in the nation
which provides year-round disaster relief as its sole project. In partnership with the
American Red Cross, the Corps specializes in disaster preparedness education for
low-income communities. They also respond locally to single-family emergencies and
provide mass service in the community, such as setting up homeless shelters,
providing emergency food supplies, and triaging medical emergencies. In October
1998, Corps member Javier Arias went to Puerto Rico to assist with disaster relief
during Hurricane George. He remembers most proudly the moment when he directed

a stranded van of volunteers to safety after they were delayed at a roadblock. On
National Youth Service Day, Javier, now an employee of the Red Cross, will be giving
a workshop on earthquake preparedness at the Los Angeles Red Cross's Emergency
Preparation Fair.
Michal Goldvaser, age 17
Los Angeles, California
A native of Israel, Encino resident Michal Goldvaser moved to the United States with
her family at age seven. At that time she spoke no English, and experienced first-
hand the difficulties of fitting into a different culture. Now a senior and student body
vice president, Michal started a chapter of Best Buddies International at Birmingham
High School. Best Buddies is a program which pairs developmentally challenged
children with high school students, in the hopes of fostering one-to-one friendships.
Earlier this year, Michal was honored by the NBA with a TeamUp All-Star 2000 Award,
obtaining a grant to help implement her National Youth Service Day Project. With the
aid of Hevvah, United Synagogue Youth and the Birmingham Student Council,
Michal's Best Buddies group will host a lakeside picnic with entertainment and craft
projects.
Vanessa Ruiz, age 16
Miami, FL
A junior at Miami Springs Senior High School, Vanessa works with the Non-Violence
Project to help young people stay away from violence. Earlier this year, Vanessa was
a semi-finalist in the NBA's TeamUp All-Star 2000 Awards, where she won a grant to
help implement her National Youth Service Day Project. Along with her school's
Anchor Club, Vanessa and the Non-Violence Project will lead 20 young women from
the ages of 15-17 in a variety of community service activities, as part of a larger
program called Girls' Voice 2000.
Nnennia Ejebe, age 17
Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota
Nnennia is involved with the National Youth Leadership Council, a nonprofit
organization based in Minnesota that works to promote a new vision of learning, youth,
and community. Nnennia has volunteered over 200 hours to service projects ranging
from planting trees in her community to building playgrounds on Martin Luther King
Day. For National Youth Service Day, with the help of Sears, Roebuck & Co., Nnennia
and 25 other students from Wayzata High School will assist senior citizens in building
a garden at the Bassett Creek Commons Senior Apartment Building.

Lilly Ardell, age 17
Northbrook, Illinois
Lilly, a senior at Glenbrook North High School, traveled to the Dominican Republic with
the Amigos de las Americas program, a youth service organization dedicated to
serving Latin American countries. In close collaboration with local and national
Dominican contacts, Lilly worked on a rural health program which facilitated latrine
construction, initiated a running water system in the community, and educated local
young people about HIV/AIDS awareness. On National Youth Service Day, Lilly will
host a community fair highlighting volunteer opportunities in Northbrook.
Jason Crowe, age 13
Newburgh, Indiana
Jason has worked locally, nationally, and internationally since he was ten years old to
bring attention to conditions in the troubled Balkan republics. Jason was inspired by
the story of a cellist in Bosnia who, after watching 22 innocent people murdered while
standing in a bread line, played his cello without stopping for 22 hours in their honor.
in April of 1999, at age 12, Jason created "Operation Yellow Bow for Kosovo," a
campaign to raise money for Kosovo relief. In addition, Jason publishes The Informer,
a newspaper that discusses issues affecting youth and shows kids they can change
their world through service; all proceeds from subscribers go to the American Cancer
Society. On National Youth Service Day, Jason is setting up a spring food drive at a
local McDonald's. He'll also be hosting a book signing for a new book in which he has
been profiled, Teens with the Courage to Give by author Jackie Waldman.
Marta Young, age 18
Portland, Oregon
Marta volunteers with her- local-Key Club in order to serve her community's elderly and
low-income populations. Marta has traveled twice to Mexico to build houses and
distribute clothes to those in need. Along with her Clackamas High School Community
Service Coalition, Marta recently built a playground at Water Tower Park. For National
Youth Service Day, with the help of Sears, Roebuck & Co., Marta and over 50 Key
Club members and college students will renovate the Lent Boys and Girls Club in
Portland. They plan to paint the Club, lay new carpet and install new computer
software, and will continue to stay involved with the children who visit the Club after
the completion of the renovation.

Nicole has turned grief into giving. When her mother, brother, and best friend Jessica
died in a tragic car accident in 1997, Nicole discovered that the only thing that made

her feel better was helping others. Now a senior at Antonian College Preparatory, she
is the student director of City Year City Heroes, a student-led volunteer program
working on Project Jessica 2000, an effort to collect 2,000 units of blood in honor of
Jessica's graduation year. For National Youth Service Day, Nicole is hosting a Youth
Summit and a service graffiti clean-up project, and is expecting over 500 young people
to participate.

San Diego, California
Greg and his Students Doing Good Every Day will be hosting a beach clean-up project
for National Youth Service Day. About 100 students from the Volunteer Center at the
San Diego United Way will be cleaning up Fiesta Island. Greg's program is part of an
umbrella network called SAVY (Students Act Volunteering for You). SAVY has
actively encouraged San Diego's young people to participate in National Youth Service
Day by offering mini-grants for projects county-wide. So far, SAVY has sponsored 48
service projects, ranging from school-based recycling and literacy programs to a
"Community Face Lift" house painting effort.
Michel Lau, age 16
San Francisco Bay Area, California
Michel volunteers in several programs around the San Francisco Bay Area. She tutors
pre-school-age children at the California Academy of Sciences, and spends time in the
Intensive Care Unit of a local hospital. As the coordinator of her high school's

community service program, Michel works with administrators to shape the school's

service curriculum. She also represents the Bay Area in Youth CAN, and finds time to
serve as a Youth Commissioner for the City of San Francisco, advising the Mayor on
issues affecting children and families. For National Youth Service Day, she is leading
an effort by San Francisco's Promise to clean up the Golden Gate Park. In
partnership with The San Francisco Service Community Collaborative and Youth for
Environmental Service, more than 150 young volunteers will work on a variety of
environmental service projects in the Park, including the removal of non-native plant
species.

Even though he's an active student at Chevy Chase's Richard Montgomery High
School, Josh finds time to channel his interest in journalism into a variety of service
activities. Josh is a veteran reporter for Children's Express, a nonprofit children's news
service working to provide coverage of today's issues from a young person's
perspective. In 1996, Josh went to Bangladesh to report on child labor conditions. He
toured numerous factories where children were being exploited and wrote a series of
expose stories on child labor. This summer Josh will be covering the Republican
National Convention for Children's Express. Because Josh's school will be on spring
break during National Youth Service Day, Josh hosted a hunger banquet during the
week of April 3 for his service project. The proceeds were donated to starving children
in Mozambique.

American University senior Kimberly Williams is the driving force behind Project
Playground, a campus-wide initiative to build a playground at 6th and Mississippi Ave
SE in the District's Ward 8. Beyond providing at-risk children with a safe place to play,
Kim's larger goal is to develop a lasting relationship between her private liberal arts
university and a troubled low-income neighborhood Participants in the build will

playground takes shape, Scholastic will be hosting a Read-a-thon and Fun Fair for

contacted us in recent months regarding HHS' Girl Power! public education campaign.
In the past two days, we have tried to contact the girls to discuss the possibility of their
participation in the White House Conference on Teenagers, but have only had success in
contacting Gabriella Contreras directly. On such short notice, Gabriella would be our
recommendation.
At nine, Gabriella has started her own school club to help her classmates resist
negative influences. She is now 14 years of age and has been working with HHS to
distribute Girl Power! materials and products at her speaking engagements and public
events since the beginning this year.

Name: Trent Blythe
Age: 18
Home: Wimberly, Texas
Trent, a senior in high school, is a member of the football, basketball, and
track team. He also finds time to act in plays such as Twelfth Night, Merry Wives of
Windsor, and Becket. When he's not excelling at school, on the field, or on stage,
he's preaching a message to his peers: Don't do drugs and practice abstinence. Trent
works as a DARE speaker in his local elementary school. He also servcs on the
National Campaign for the Prevention of Teen Pregnancy's Youth Council. Trent
attended Boys Nation last year to represent the state of Texas. Through his
involyement in these organizations, he was given the opportunity to sit on a panel on
"Winning Choices" at the Maryland Governor's Conference on Abstinence this past
August Trent's motivation for his work to promote abstinence and a drug-free
lifestyle stems from his belief in God
Name: Aubyn Burnside

At the age of 12, Aubyn initiated a project called Suitcascs for Kids, which
provides luggage for foster children who have traditionally moved their belongings in
black garbage bags. In its fifth year, the project is an international appeal. As
founder and CEO of the nonprofit, Aubyn volunteers every day. Suitcases for Kids
has provided not only luggage but also homes for numerous foster children in
Aubyn's community and in many surrounding counties. Through Aubyn's project, the
plight of foster children has been brought to the forefront. Agencies and individuals
have donated clothes, shoes, and supplies. Aubyn personally donated $1,000 of her
savings so that local foster children who were seniors in high school could have class
rings, yearbooks, and formal wear to attend their prom. Aubyn has recruited
churches, Boy and Girl scouts, 4-Hers, Campfire Girls, schools, and Boys and Girls
Clubs for her army of volunteers. Aubyn's project, which initially involved just her
and her friends, now has a formal relationship with the local Department of Social
Services.

Seven years ago, Amber founded "Happy Helpers for the Homeless," a program
based out of her kitchen. Each Saturday morning, Amber would round up her friends
and they would make bagged lunches for the homeless in Baltimore, and then go
throughout the city distributing them in parks. Today, Happy Helpers prepare 600
bag lunches weekly, sort donations, hold food and toiletry drives, hold awareness
events, etc. There are also branches located all across the country. Today, Amber is

Stephanie once scoured phone books and directories for places she could spend
her time, but now this young woman has more than enough organizations and
activities on her plate. For the past two years she has taken leadership in organizing
Hawaii's Youth day of Caring, an island-wide youth environmental cleanup project of
the United Way. She serves as the Project's Vice-Chair and the Promotion
committee's Co-chair. This October, Stephanie and Hawaii will be hosting the
Millennium Young Peoples' Congress. It will be a world-wide event bringing around
1000 teens together to discuss global priorities for the new millennium and how teens
will help solve these issues. She also serves on the America's Promise Hawaii and
AmeriCorps' Youth Service Leadcrship Board along with participating on the
Planning Policy Committee for the American Lung Association.

Name: Gennifer Davis
Age: 16
Home: Portsmouth, OH
Gennifer has been very active in her local community center over the years so
when the city slated the 14th Street Community Center for demolition Gennifer went
to work. She is a youth member of the Board of Directors and for two years she has
been coordinating events and projects to help raise funds for a new building.
Gennifer also has extensive leadership experience with the Girl Scouts of America.
She has a total of eleven years with the organization, has been awarded the Silver
Award, and was a delegate to the National Convention this past year. Gennifer also
helped to organize the first blood drive in the African-American community in
Portsmouth and received the local American Red Cross Youth Hero Award in 1999.
She has studied dance for 12yrs and is a student teacher of jazz and ballet. Gennifer
is also very active in her school band and choir.

Chris has spent his entire high school career working with Interact Community
Service Club. He has organized and taken part in countless service projects from
food drives and blood drives to Senior Citizen Proms and Kid's Expos through his
involvement with the club and was District Chairman for a year. He has designed the
Brewster High School's website, has been on various school committees, and has
helped to choose the new principal. Chris is well known for his involvement in the
community and has recently been asked to be a student representative to the Brewster
Education Foundation. He is also sought out by his peers for his leadership role in
the community to give guidance for new clubs and school organizations.

serves right now as an AmeriCorps Promise Fellow in the state of Massachusetts.
Originally from Seattle, David moved across country to work with the Massachusetts
Service Alliance; the state's commission on volunteerism and community service.
Through his work, he helps to provide young people with the essential resources
needed for proper growth and development. While in college, David served as the
vice president of Campus Vote, a non-partisan voter education organization, with the
aim at getting more young people involved in our political process. He believes it is
of great importance to have political leaders hear the voice of this generation. David
has been a Washington Center Minority Leaders Fellow and has worked on
representing minorities' interests before Congress, the White House, and other policy
makers.

Home: Stanford, CA
Planning to graduate from Stanford University with honors, Tritia has had her
share of experience with service both in, and outside, the classroom. Shc is very
active at the Asian American Activities Center and is the program director of Frosh
Series for the center. When Tritia is not mentoring her peers she makes time for
younger students as a mentor for an eighth grade girl in her community and as a drop-
in center tutor. She is Administrative Coordinator for Intervarsity Christian
Fellowship at Standford and managing and copy editor for a national student
publication, Amarantos. Tritia was an outstanding summer intern with Youth Service
America this past summer and worked with the Affiliates Program among many other
valuable projects. Tritia had a life changing experience with service through a one-
week trip focusing on Asian American community issues, and it has changed how she
wants to live her life and devote her time.

"I would like to be an advocate for progress." This is one of the reasons Venus
does the work she does with the Boys and Girls Club, the local food bank, and her
community garden. She is Vice President of her district youth group and continually
challenges young people around her to overcome fears and perceived limitations.
Venus has been a little sister to the Link Community program, an effort that matches
youth with elderly adults, and has bcen a counselor at the Regional Day School for
challenged students. This is where she says her perspective on service was changed
forever.

Arthur has recently been selected as chairperson for his state's Youth Action
Council. As chair, he will sit on the Texas Board of Commissions and will work
along side the governor to implement productive youth programs and to promote
youth involvement in volunteerism. Arthur also works with the local Youth Advisory
Council through his connection with Midland's Promise. He loves doing special
events with Junior Achievement and has organized a Shrimpfest, Bowl-a-thon, and a
half marathon run for the organization. Habitat for Humanity also enjoys his talents
and he has worked locally with programs such as Christmas in April and Meals on
Wheels.

Melissa has been described as an outstanding young individual who is an example
of commitment, dependability and sincerity. Melissa herself says that she is a hard
worker, follows her dreams, and knows that she can, and will, make a difference. As
1999 Miss Teen Wisconsin Achievement, Mclissa travels to different libraries across
the state leading children in reading and activities to encourage literacy. She has been
successful in engaging other students to do service by having over one third of her
school participate in the school's Community Assistance Program (CAP). This
program does a variety of events throughout the year including Special Olympics and
Kid Saturday (a day for parents to do holiday shopping while CAP provided

structured activities). Melissa is involved in her high school band, forensics and
French clubs, cross country, and golf team among many other accomplishments. One
thing she feels very strongly about is her work with the International Christian
Concern organization, and has spent much time working for freedom of religion

Cara believes that everyone should work together with others so that wc each can
reach our potential and live in a better world. She certainly is leading by example.
Through her work at the Holland Patent Free Library, she has organized special
events and programs for children. She has volunteered at the library for four years
and demonstrates nothing but responsibility and enthusiasm. She is involved with
many sport and orchestra groups in her high school, and teaches religious education
for second graders at her local church. Cara would like to pursue a degree in the
social service field and has participated in the School and Business Alliance program
to find out more about the field through United Cerebral Palsy and Handicapped
Persons Association of the Utica Area, Inc. She also voluntecrs extensively with this
organization providing structured activities for kids.

Greg has surpassed any and all records for community service at his school. He
has been actively involved in his community since the fourth grade when he started
painting over graffiti in neglected areas of Southern California. Greg believes that all
schools in the United States should have the mission to provide students with
education and leadership in the form of service for the common good. He has been
involved with National Youth Leadership Council and is Community Service
Association organizer this year. In junior high, Greg was a member of student
council, spoke about the benefits of service to his peers, raised donations for various
causes, founded the James Bond Club and the "Can Opener Drive," an effort to give
openers along with donated food to families, among many other accomplishments.
Now that Greg is a sophomore in high school, he plans to continue his efforts in
community service and is involved with various school and community projects.

and middle schools, and enrolls AmeriCorps members to teach conflict resolution and
mentoring to more than 3,000 middle school students each year. A former
AmeriCorps member herself, Torria dislocated a shoulder and broke her collarbone
intervening in a fight at a Detroit public middle school. Over National Youth Service
Day weekend, Torria's group HYPE, a multi-ethnic program which trains teens how to
stay away from violent situations, will/host a "Safe Night Lock-In" for 300 children at
Beard, Southwest Detroit's oldest elementary school. The following morning, the
children will build and dedicate a Peace Garden at the school.
Jason Kai Tung, age 17
Houston, Texas
A senior at Houston's Bellaire Senior High School, Jason is the Park Project Chair for
the Kids' Way Youth Advisory Committee of the United Way. Earlier this year, Jason
was a semi-finalist In the NBA's TeamUp All-Star 2000 Awards, where he won a grant
to help implement his National Youth Service Day Project. With the aid of the Office of
the Western Fifth Ward, Jason and Kids' Way will revitalize and refurbish Semmes
Park. Over 40 participants will remove trash, replant flower beds, assemble and
secure picnic tables, and paint the park's outdoor theater.

Javier Arias, age 20
Los Angeles, California
The Los Angeles Rapid Response Corps is the only AmeriCorps team in the nation
which provides year-round disaster relief as its sole project. In partnership with the
American Red Cross, the Corps specializes in disaster preparedness education for
low-income communities. They also respond locally to single-family emergencies and
provide mass service in the community, such as setting up homeless shelters,
providing emergency food supplies, and triaging medical emergencies. In October
1998, Corps member Javier Arias went to Puerto Rico to assist with disaster relief
during Hurricane George. He remembers most proudly the moment when he directed

a stranded van of volunteers to safety after they were delayed at a roadblock. On
National Youth Service Day, Javier, now an employee of the Red Cross, will be giving
a workshop on earthquake preparedness at the Los Angeles Red Cross's Emergency
Preparation Fair.
Michal Goldvaser, age 17
Los Angeles, California
A native of Israel, Encino resident Michal Goldvaser moved to the United States with
her family at age seven. At that time she spoke no English, and experienced first-
hand the difficulties of fitting into a different culture. Now a senior and student body
vice president, Michal started a chapter of Best Buddies International at Birmingham
High School. Best Buddies is a program which pairs developmentally challenged
children with high school students, in the hopes of fostering one-to-one friendships.
Earlier this year, Michal was honored by the NBA with a TeamUp All-Star 2000 Award,
obtaining a grant to help implement her National Youth Service Day Project. With the
aid of Hevvah, United Synagogue Youth and the Birmingham Student Council,
Michal's Best Buddies group will host a lakeside picnic with entertainment and craft
projects.
Vanessa Ruiz, age 16
Miami, FL
A junior at Miami Springs Senior High School, Vanessa works with the Non-Violence
Project to help young people stay away from violence. Earlier this year, Vanessa was
a semi-finalist in the NBA's TeamUp All-Star 2000 Awards, where she won a grant to
help implement her National Youth Service Day Project. Along with her school's
Anchor Club, Vanessa and the Non-Violence Project will lead 20 young women from
the ages of 15-17 in a variety of community service activities, as part of a larger
program called Girls' Voice 2000.
Nnennia Ejebe, age 17
Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota
Nnennia is involved with the National Youth Leadership Council, a nonprofit
organization based in Minnesota that works to promote a new vision of learning, youth,
and community. Nnennia has volunteered over 200 hours to service projects ranging
from planting trees in her community to building playgrounds on Martin Luther King
Day. For National Youth Service Day, with the help of Sears, Roebuck & Co., Nnennia
and 25 other students from Wayzata High School will assist senior citizens in building
a garden at the Bassett Creek Commons Senior Apartment Building.

visit environmental education stations, work on craft projects, and listen to speakers
addressing environmental issues.
Josh Kretman, age 16
Washington, DC
Even though he's an active student at Chevy Chase's Richard Montgomery High
School, Josh finds time to channel his interest in journalism into a variety of service
activities. Josh is a veteran reporter for Children's Express, a nonprofit children's news
service working to provide coverage of today's issues from a young person's
perspective. in 1996, Josh went to Bangladesh to report on child labor conditions. He
toured numerous factories where children were being exploited and wrote a series of
expose stories on child labor. This summer Josh will be covering the Republican
National Convention for Children's Express. Because Josh's school will be on spring
break during National Youth Service Day, Josh hosted a hunger banquet during the
week of April 3 for his service project. The proceeds were donated to starving children
in Mozambique.
Kimberly Williams, age 21
Washington, DC
American University senior Kimberly Williams is the driving force behind Project
Playground, a campus-wide initiative to build a playground at 6th and Mississippi Ave
SE in the District's Ward 8. Beyond providing at-risk children with a safe place to play,
Kim's larger goal is to develop a lasting relationship between her private liberal arts
university and a troubled low-income neighborhood Participants in the build will
include faculty, staff, and students from American University community. As the
playground takes shape, Scholastic will be hosting a Read-a-thon and Fun Fair for
younger children in a.nearby community center.

Teresa Smith, age 16
Charlotte, North Carolina
Teresa is involved in the Teen Court program, an alternative to Juvenile Court for
defendants ages 9-18 administered by the non-profit organization Re-Entry. In Teen
Court, defendants who have committed first-time misdemeanors stand trial in a court
of their peers and receive constructive sentences. Punishments are tailored on a
case-by-case basis. For National Youth Service Day, with the help of Sears, Roebuck
& Co., Teresa is organizing a Teen Court Open House and a Mock Trial for the Capital
Area Teen Court Her goal is to recruit three new volunteers for Teen Court from
every middle and high school in Wake County on National Youth Service Day alone.
Ahmad Goree, age 17
Dallas, Texas
At the age of 13, Ahmad, a member of Allied Youth, began visiting elementary schools
to share his message about the dangers of drugs. For National Youth Service Day,
Ahmad will lead his fellow H. Grady Spruce High School students in an intensive
service project called "Stop the Violence: Gang Intervention." For four days, students
will participate in forums and workshops on the dangers of gang, violence and how not
to get involved. On the last day, a rally will be held for the entire student population.

Torria Wynn, age 34
Detroit, Michigan
Torria is the Program Director of Nonviolence KOPS (Nonviolence Kids,
Organizations, Parents, and Schools). KOPS uses Martin Luther King nonviolence
techniques to reduce the level of crime and violence in seven of Detroit's elementary

and middle schools, and enrolls AmeriCorps members to teach conflict resolution and
mentoring to more than 3,000 middle school students each year. A former
AmeriCorps member herself, Torria dislocated a shoulder and broke her collarbone
intervening in a fight at a Detroit public middle school. Over National Youth Service
Day weekend, Torria's group HYPE, a multi-ethnic program which trains teens how to
stay away from violent situations, will,host a "Safe Night Lock-In" for 300 children at
Beard, Southwest Detroit's oldest elementary school. The following morning, the
children will build and dedicate a Peace Garden at the school.
Jason Kai Tung, age 17
Houston, Texas
A senior at Houston's Bellaire Senior High School, Jason is the Park Project Chair for
the Kids' Way Youth Advisory Committee of the United Way. Earlier this year, Jason
was a semi-finalist in the NBA's TeamUp All-Star 2000 Awards, where he won a grant
to help implement his National Youth Service Day Project. With the ald of the Office of
the Western Fifth Ward, Jason and Kids' Way will revitalize and refurbish Semmes
Park. Over 40 participants will remove trash, replant flower beds, assemble and
secure picnic tables, and paint the park's outdoor theater.

Javier Arias, age 20
Los Angeles, California
The Los Angeles Rapid Response Corps is the only AmeriCorps team in the nation
which provides year-round disaster relief as its sole project. In partnership with the
American Red Cross, the Corps specializes in disaster preparedness education for
low-income communities. They also respond locally to single-family emergencies and
provide mass service in the community, such as setting up homeless shelters,
providing emergency food supplies, and triaging medical emergencies. in October
1998, Corps member Javier Arias went to Puerto Rico to assist with disaster relief
during Hurricane George. He remembers most proudly the moment when he directed

Lilly Ardell, age 17
Northbrook, Illinois
Lilly, a senior at Glenbrook North High School, traveled to the Dominican Republic with
the Amigos de las Americas program, a youth service organization dedicated to
serving Latin American countries. In close collaboration with local and national
Dominican contacts, Lilly worked on a rural health program which facilitated latrine
construction, initiated a running water system in the community, and educated local
young people about HIV/AIDS awareness. On National Youth Service Day, Lilly will
host a community fair highlighting volunteer opportunities in Northbrook.
Jason Crowe, age 13
Newburgh, Indiana
Jason has worked locally, nationally, and internationally since he was ten years old to
bring attention to conditions in the troubled Balkan republics. Jason was inspired by
the story of a cellist in Bosnia who, after watching 22 innocent people murdered while
standing in a bread line, played his cello without stopping for 22 hours in their honor.
In April of 1999, at age 12, Jason created "Operation Yellow Bow for Kosovo," a
campaign to raise money for Kosovo relief. In addition, Jason publishes The Informer,
a newspaper that discusses issues affecting youth and shows kids they can change
their world through service; all proceeds from subscribers go to the American Cancer
Society. On National Youth Service Day, Jason is setting up a spring food drive at a
local McDonald's. He'll also be hosting a book signing for a new book in which he has
been profiled, Teens with the Courage to Give by author Jackie Waldman.
Marta Young, age 18
Portland, Oregon
Marta volunteers with her local Key Club in order to serve her community's elderly and
low-income populations. Marta has traveled twice to Mexico to build houses and
distribute clothes to those in need. Along with her Clackamas High School Community
Service Coalition, Marta recently built a playground at Water Tower Park. For National
Youth Service Day, with the help of Sears, Roebuck & Co., Marta and over 50 Key
Club members and college students will renovate the Lent Boys and Girls Club in
Portland. They plan to paint the Club, lay new carpet and install new computer
software, and will continue to stay involved with the children who visit the Club after
the completion of the renovation.
Nicole Salinas, age 17
San Antonio, Texas
Nicole has turned grief into giving. When her mother, brother, and best friend Jessica
died in a tragic car accident in 1997, Nicole discovered that the only thing that made

her feel better was helping others. Now a senior at Antonian College Preparatory, she
is the student director of City Year City Heroes, a student-led volunteer program
working on Project Jessica 2000, an effort to collect 2,000 units of blood in honor of
Jessica's graduation year. For National Youth Service Day, Nicole is hosting a Youth
Summit and a service graffiti clean-up project, and is expecting over 500 young people
to participate.

San Diego, California
Greg and his Students Doing Good Every Day will be hosting a beach clean-up project
for National Youth Service Day. About 100 students from the Volunteer Center at the
San Diego United Way will be cleaning up Fiesta Island. Greg's program is part of an
umbrella network called SAVY (Students Act Volunteering for You). SAVY has
actively encouraged San Diego's young people to participate in National Youth Service
Day by offering mini-grants for projects county-wide. So far, SAVY has sponsored 48
service projects, ranging from school-based recycling and literacy programs to a
"Community Face Lift" house painting effort.
Michel Lau, age 16
San Francisco Bay Area, California
Michel volunteers in several programs around the San Francisco Bay Area. She tutors
pre-school-age children at the California Academy of Sciences, and spends time in the
Intensive Care Unit of a local hospital. As the coordinator of her high school's
community service program, Michel works with administrators to shape the school's
service curriculum. She also represents the Bay Area in Youth CAN, and finds time to
serve as a Youth Commissioner for the City of San Francisco, advising the Mayor on
issues affecting children and families. For National Youth Service Day, she is leading
an effort by San Francisco's Promise to clean up the Golden Gate Park. In
partnership with The San Francisco Service Community Collaborative and Youth for
Environmental Service, more than 150 young volunteers will work on a variety of
environmental service projects in the Park, including the removal of non-native plant
species.
Nadia Smith, age 15
San Francisco Bay Area, California
Nadia is the co-founder of Club Active, a service club at Head-Royce School in
Oakland that organizes volunteer opportunities for students. Club Active provides
counseling to foster children and families, and has established a program to send
Nicaraguan youth to school. Earlier this year, Nadia and her friend Tessa Graham
were honored by the NBA with a TeamUp All-Star 2000 Award, winning a grant to help
them implement projects for National Youth Service Day. Nadia has chosen to plant a

Native California Butterfly Garden at Markham Elementary School. Participants can
visit environmental education stations, work on craft projects, and listen to speakers
addressing environmental issues.
Josh Kretman, age 16
Washington, DC
Even though he's an active student at Chevy Chase's Richard Montgomery High
School, Josh finds time to channel his interest in journalism into a variety of service
activities. Josh is a veteran reporter for Children's Express, a nonprofit children's news
service working to provide coverage of today's issues from a young person's
perspective. In 1996, Josh went to Bangladesh to report on child labor conditions. He
toured numerous factories where children were being exploited and wrote a series of
expose stories on child labor. This summer Josh will be covering the Republican
National Convention for Children's Express. Because Josh's school will be on spring
break during National Youth Service Day, Josh hosted a hunger banquet during the
week of April 3 for his service project. The proceeds were donated to starving children
in Mozambique.
Kimberly Williams, age 21
Washington, DC
American University senior Kimberly Williams is the driving force behind Project
Playground, a campus-wide initiative to build a playground at 6th and Mississippi Ave
SE in the District's Ward 8. Beyond providing at-risk children with a safe place to play,
Kim's larger goal is to develop a lasting relationship between her private liberal arts
university and a troubled low-income neighborhood Participants in the build will
include faculty, staff, and students from American University community. As the
playground takes shape, Scholastic will be hosting a Read-a-thon and Fun Fair for
younger children in a nearby community center.

Dear Mary Ellen:
I wanted to drop you a note to let you know that the White House Conference on Teenagers has
had an ongoing effect on Mary Grace. Since her return from Washington this summer, she has been in
contact with a "Gateway" school about setting up a continuing art program for severely disabled children.
She is learning the fine points of working with the private and governmental sectors and seeing first hand
how easy it is to have a commitment but sometimes difficult to put it into action. However, Mrs. Clinton's
remarks about the talents and energies of our nations youth stirred something within her to be a more active
participant in her community.
Mary Grace reminded me that while at the conference we had a picture taken with Mrs. Clinton
and while we received the ones with the President the picture with Mrs. Clinton was not included. I don't
know if it would be possible to find the one taken with Mrs. Clinton and our family but she has become a
role model for Mary Grace and 1 think it would mean a lot to her if it were possible to get a copy , if
available.
I hope your summer was relaxing and wish you luck in the fall political actions. Again thanks for
the many things you and the folks at the White House have done for our family.
