I. PURPOSE
The Alfalfa Club takes its name from the plant reputed
to send its roots farthest in search of liquid refreshment.
Aside from its members and their guests gathering once a
year for fellowship, good food, and good music, the Alfalfa
Club has no purpose. It is purely a social club whose
object is "to make life brighter and more comfortable for
its members and their friends."
II. BACKGROUND
The Alfalfa Club was started in 1913 in Washington,
D.C., by four Southern men. Although it started small, the
Alfalfa Club grew considerably during the 1930's. Today
there are 200 members who gather once a year for dinner.
Traditionally, the Alfalfa Club has been for men only.
This is the first year that women are allowed to attend the
dinner or become members. Last year, female members of the
Cabinet and Justice O'Connor were invited, but none were
able to attend. of the nine new members, three are female.
The Club is bipartisan and politically and racially
unbiased. African Americans were recruited as members
approximately 15 years ago under the leadership of former
Chief Justice and Alfalfa President Warren Burger. Past
presidents of the Alfalfa Club also include Sen. David
Boren, Hon. Henry Kissinger, Sen. Alan Simpson, Hon. James
Baker III, and Col. John Bourgeois. The outgoing president
this year is Sen. Charles Robb, and the incoming president
is Sen. Pete Domenici.

IV. SEQUENCE OF EVENTS
7:20 pm Music of Marine Band and Marine Drum and Bugle
Corps; march on of Colors.
7:45 pm Off-stage introduction of you and the First Lady;
"Ruffles and Flourishes" is played.
7:50 pm President Robb welcomes guests, acknowledges the
Marine Band and Drum and Bugle Corps, and opens
the 81st Anniversary Dinner of Alfalfa.
7:55 pm Lobster is served.
8:20 pm Entree is served.
8:55 pm President Robb gives farewell address and
introduces new Alfalfa president, Sen. Pete
Domenici.
9:07 pm Sgt. Michael Ryan sings "For He's Our President."
9:10 pm President Domenici gives acceptance speech.
9:20 pm Salad is served.
9:40 pm James Symington is recognized by President
Domenici, then initiates new members. President
Domenici welcomes new members and announces that
Sgt. Michael Ryan will serenade with "Come to the
Land of Alfalfa" as they return to their seats.

10:35 pm Alfalfa candidate (Speaker Thomas Foley) gives
acceptance speech; President Domenici responds
briefly.
10:40 pm President Domenici calls on you for brief remarks.
10:45 pm You make brief remarks.
11:00 pm President Domenici thanks you, thanks organizers,
and adjourns dinner.
