On behalf of the Wyoming Valley Health Care System and Cardiac
Surgery Associates and The Wilkes-Barre General Hospital where I am
the Chief of Cardiac Surgery, I wish to invite Mrs. Clinton to be our
guest at a lecture by Dr. Dean Ornish, to be given on February 21,
1994 at the Kirby Center in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. I had the
honor of operating on Ms. Caputo's father recently. During his
convalescence in the hospital, Ms. Caputo mentioned Dr. Dean Ornish,
whose diet Mrs. Clinton is quite familiar with and whose diet I have
strongly encouraged my patients to adopt in the post-operative period.
In light of Mrs. Clinton's immense interest and immersion in the
health care situation of the 1990's and her personal respect for Dr.
Ornish, Ms. Caputo suggested that maybe Mrs. Clinton might be
interested in coming to this forum. We are having him give two
lectures, one in the afternoon and 2:00 pm for primarily the patients
and the 7:00 pm lecture for physicians, Mayors of the local counties,
hospital administrators, and other invited guests. We expect to have
approximately 2000 people for each lecture by invitation only. If Mrs.
Clinton was interested in attending, she would be more than welcome to
comment on the lecture or whatever else she would like to comment on.
I am keenly aware of the demands of of her position and husband's
position and recognize that it may not be feasible. I am sure it
would add to the entire milieu of the lecture on Reversing Heart
Disease and preventing heart surgery, such as I am trained to do at
great cost. Your attention and time in addressing this matter is
sincerely appreciated.

We are writing on behalf of Oxford University Press and Wellesley College to invite you to
participate in an exciting and, we believe, groundbreaking project we are jointly sponsoring.
Wellesley and Oxford are about to launch an annual lecture series modelled on the distinguished
Clarendon lectures given at Oxford University. It will be called "The Oxford University
Press/Wellesley College Lectures," and will feature distinguished women whose work and ideas
have made a major contribution to contemporary intellectual life.
Each year one woman will be invited to deliver these lectures on a topic of her choice. The
work should be original, and the lecturer will be given free reign to pursue any topic so long as
it addresses questions of broad social or cultural significance. The series will be the centerpiece
of Wellesley's public lecture program and, unlike other lectures at the college, will consist of
multiple lectures by one speaker. We envision two large public lectures and a third talk to a
smaller more interactive audience, perhaps a joint student-faculty colloquium linked to the subject
matter, sometime during the week. You may require a different format, and we would of course
be open to alternatives.
These lectures will be permanently preserved in book form under a special joint Oxford
University Press/Wellesley College imprint, in what we hope will grow to be a unique body of
creative criticism by leading women in the world of letters, the arts, public policy, the sciences,
and history. With the participation of distinguished lecturers such as yourself, we anticipate that
the books spawned by this venture will be widely read and will help shape both international and
public policy discussions in years ahead. In the past, Oxford and the New York Public Library
have entered a similar venture. Last spring, Oxford and the Library jointly published Robert
Hughes's Culture of Complaint: The Fraying of America (copy enclosed). The book is based
upon the Oxford/Public Library lectures he delivered in January 1992. At the time the lectures
attracted a good deal of attention. The book has attracted much more, and indeed was on the
New York Times bestseller list for several months.

Both Oxford and Wellesley feel that you would be ideal to inaugurate this undertaking. We're
certain that your participation would not only guarantee a wonderful piece of work in and of
itself, but would garner immediate distinction to a long-term project which is close to the hearts
of both of our institutions, and which we intend to support as fully as possible. In setting up the
lectures, and in converting the lectures to book form, we can assure you of the respect and
whole-hearted cooperation of everyone at Wellesley and Oxford.
In return for the considerable time they take to prepare, we can offer you a generous fee for the
lectures and a further advance against royalties on the proceeds from the sale of the book.
Wellesley College will also benefit from a share of the book royalties and these royalties will be
used to establish a fellowship fund for graduates of the College. Fellowships of up to $10,000
will be awarded to recent Wellesley graduates to help them complete a book or other substantial
intellectual project that explores women's diverse contributions to contemporary thought. If you
would rather waive the lecture fee and advance, you may want to consider some other way to
designate the proceeds from the sale of the book--perhaps you could designate the Wellesley
fellowship as the beneficiary of any funds generated by the lectures and the sale of the book.
We would be happy to discuss other alternatives.

We would be honored to have her address any Medical Grand Rounds at

Grand Rounds is a weekly forum presenting current topics in
Pediatric Medicine. Her audience would typically consist of

As one of my first official acts as President of Duke, it is my great

Commencement address on Sunday, May 8. Our Commencement selection
committee of faculty and students met in April, and notified me that you

contacting you until I could do so officially as President of Duke, knowing

Duke has a tradition of inviting Commencement speakers representing a
variety of professions who share the characteristics of having something

Thank you for referring the article on the Kotzebue Senior
Center which is unfortunately closing its doors soon. The
senior citizens are forced to move to another center outside
of their home district because of the closure. This brings
me to the reason why I am writing to you.
Attached is an invitation letter inviting First Lady Hillary
Rodman Clinton to the 1993 Alaska Health Summit on November
30, 1993 in Anchorage, Alaska. This is our state's only
health summit much like the one chaired by the First Lady.
Alaskan health care issues like developments in public
health, health care and health financing, among other health
care topics. This is an opportunity for the First Lady and
her staff to become familiar with health care issues
affecting Alaskans.
If First Lady Hillary Rodman Clinton cannot attend, the
group invites Ira Magaziner, Secretary Shalala, or another
high ranking administration official to attend this meeting.

First of all, I thought the First Lady was fabulous
last night with Katie Couric. Very warm, very real.
And I didn't know she was so funny. A lot of wit
was being flashed between them!
I am writing as editorial director of the largest
magazine for young girls in the country--Barbie, The
Magazine for Girls. We are a lifestyle publication
for girls 5 to 11 and we celebrate those wonderful
years with our 750,000 subscribers. We feature women
in many empowering situations, plus we cover careers,
science, cooking, crafts and offer reviews of notable
books, movies, videos, etc.
Our magazine is 10 years old this year. And to honor
and thank our readers, we have chosen 10 Outstanding
Girls of America. The ten winners are from all over
the country--from New Jersey to Washington State--and
are an amaazing group. We have a gymnast, a photographer,
several writers, a girl who is the only female on her
Little League team, a publisher of a multicultural
newspaper. they are fantastic! We were so impressed
with the things young girls are accomplishing in this
country. And it is rare that this age group is honored.
They are coming to New York in the fall, plus receiving
schölarship money.
We would like to have Hillary Rodham Clinton pen two
or three lines honoring these fine young woman to run
with her photograph in our fall issue of BARBIE, The
Magazine for Girls. If need be, as I realize the First
Lady is ais busy as it is humanly possible to be, we
would write a sample of what we want for her to approve.
Andrea Posner will be following up on my letter as
vacation calls! We do hope the First Lady can fine
time to honor these Ten Outstanding Girls of America.

Claremont McKenna College is located near the San Gabriel mountains east of Los Angeles
and is one of the six colleges associated in The Claremont Colleges. The mission of CMC is to
train and develop leaders in business and government. In the past decade it has risen to the
front ranks of American liberal arts colleges.
You may already know that four graduates from CMC were directly involved in the Clinton
presidential campaign. Tim Wright '77, who served the campaign as domestic policy
director, recently visited the CMC campus and kindly offered to forward this letter to your
office. Bill Podlich '66, a trustee of Claremont McKenna College, was co-chair of the
campaign in Orange County. Chris Townsend '82 served as deputy director of the California
campaign and Araceli Ruano '92 traveled to Little Rock as assistant to the national Latino
coordinator.
I direct a program at the Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum on the CMC campus which brings
individuals of distinction to speak with students, faculty and members of the college
community on topics of national and global concern. During the 1993-94 academic year the
Athenaeum is inviting speakers who will address some of the more cogent issues pertaining
to health care reform. It would be an honor to have you participate as the keynote speaker
in this series.
Should your schedule permit a visit to Claremont you will be pleased to know that the venue
is quite flexible. The usual format consists of a small dinner one evening followed by lunch
and dinner speeches the next day. The first dinner, usually at the California Club in Los
Angeles, is hosted by the Res Publica Board of Governors and includes 15 to 20 prominent
business executives. This is a social occasion with no formal address. President Jack Stark
and Vice President Jon Keates would escort you to this event.
The lunch on the next day is also in Los Angeles, this time at a downtown hotel. On this
occasion you would be addressing between 300 to 500 prominent community and business
leaders in southern California. Here we would ask you to speak for 20 to 30 minutes and take
questions for 15 to 20 minutes. Again you would be escorted by President Stark.

Community Planning is, from our vantage point, the most hopeful new
phenomenon in the early childhood field. It involves the convening of key
decision makers-from government, business, social services, health,
education, family support and early education and care to create a vision of
what their early childhood education and care system should look like and
then engage in concrete actions to bring that vision to reality. States as
diverse as West Virginia, Indiana and Florida, cities as diverse as Boston,
Miami, St. Paul and Kansas City have begun to weave their patchwork of
early care and education services into systems. The community planning
activities include developing a comprehensive, degree-granting professional
development system for child care staff, integrating services; developing
seamless funding and new financing mechanisms; developing family-
centered, neighborhood-based programming; improving quality, etc.
This Forum, the first time that the leaders of these efforts in community
planning in early education and care have ever been brought together, is a
historic event. Mrs. Clinton will be familiar with such efforts, as Glenda Bean
from Arkansas has been a national as well as a local leader, and we plan to
include her in the Forum. We have also invited Carol Rasco to be the closing
speaker.

The Forum is being co-sponsored by the Families and Work Institute and the
National Association for the Education of Young Children. As a measure of
high interest and support in the field for this event, a number of national
organizations are working with us as "endorsers" in planning it, including
the Child Care Action Campaign, the Family Resource Coalition, the
National Association for Child Care Resource and Referral Agencies, the
National Black Child Development Institute, Parent Action, Quality 2000, and
the United Way of America. The Forum is funded by the AT&T Foundation,
Carnegie Corporation of America, The Ford Foundation, and the A. L.
Mailman Family Foundation.

Although Susan Prager, Dean of the UCLA School of Law,
did not ask me to write this letter, I have taken it upon myself
to urge you to consider participating in the UCLA School of Law's
May 1994 graduation ceremonies. I believe the UCLA School of Law
uniquely exemplifies many of the values that you and President
Bill Clinton exemplify.
UCLA Law School has a long history of reaching out to
and encouraging a diverse population of students. As both a
student at UCLA and now as a recruiter for my law firm, I have
long been familiar with the fact that UCLA is one of the law
schools that regularly graduates highly qualified students of all
backgrounds. With the exception of exclusively minority law
schools, UCLA has the largest diverse/minority population of the
175 ABA approved American law schools.
As a public school, UCLA offers equal educational
opportunity to persons who otherwise would not be able to afford
to enter the legal profession. It does so in large part through
the leadership and excellence of its faculty, led for over a
decade by Dean Susan Prager. It continues to do so in times of
budgetary crisis by securing funding from private, as well as
public, sources.
The school's commitment to women in the profession is
also longstanding. Dean Prager was the second woman law
professor ever to have been made dean of a major law school (now
Ninth Circuit Judge Dorothy Nelson from the University of

Southern California was the first). Susan's success in that
position is widely recognized by students, alumni and other law
school faculty. Many of UCLA's alumni have remained in Los
Angeles and are involved in all aspects of our community here.

commencement addresses in this and the coming years of your
administration, but I hope you will consider what the UCLA Law
School represents in making your choice.

It is my pleasure on behalf of the UCLA School of Law Class of 1994 to extend an invitation to you
to serve as our graduation speaker at ceremonies in May, 1994. You are a unique figure in American
public life and we would be elated if you could join us for this occasion which is so important to our
students and their families. Each year about 3000 family and friends attend this ceremony to
celebrate with our approximately 300 graduates. The commencement ceremony will take place on
Sunday afternoon, May 22, 1994 on the UCLA campus.
Knowing that the number of invitations you can accept is limited, I thought the following information
would be helpful to you in making your decision. The UCLA School of Law is the only public law
school in all of Southern California. We are the youngest law school generally ranked among the
nation's top law schools, having been established in 1949. We have an extraordinarily strong record
of educating minority lawyers for the profession, dating back to the class which entered in the fall of
1967. Thirty-five to forty percent of recent entering classes are drawn from these groups. We see
our diversity as an enormous strength of the school. We have been a pioneer in clinical legal
education and our clinical faculty continue to provide national leadership, especially in the publication
of teaching materials and articles for clinical training. During the past thirteen years, we have built
an outstanding international law program with special emphasis on East Asia. Apart from all this, we
are generally known to combine considerable intellectual diversity in the approaches to law, with a
genuinely warm spirit. By and large, students like being here.
The current group of UCLA law students reflects broad interests and high energy. Spring and fall
have been marked by student organized initiatives to focus on efforts to help the homeless, on projects
to stimulate public interest work, and on the importance of creating work environments free from
discrimination. In recent years. our new Women's Law Journal has gotten off to an exciting start.
Contrary to popular conceptions, this generation of law students does care about others. In short, I
think you would find contact with our students stimulating and enjoyable.
Our alums have demonstrated considerable commitment to civic responsibility and public service.
Many, for example, were involved with the Christopher Commission, as Commissioners or as

volunteer staff, and, of course, we count Kim McLane Wardlaw and Bill Wardlaw as among our most
outstanding alums.
