The Leadership Conference on Civil Rights is pleased to present a joint Award to the new leadership of the NAACP,
Myrlie Evers-Williams, Chairperson of the National Board of Directors, and The Honorable Kweisi Mfume, President and CEO,
and to The Honorable Norman Y. Mineta, for his leadership in Congress.
An activist and author, Myrlie Evers-Williams has been a vigorous participant in the struggle for
justice and equality. A role model for young people, she has lectured extensively before civil rights
groups, women's organizations, social groups and at universities. A leader in voter registration
campaigns, she continues to participate in grassroots work with numerous organizations.
Born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, Kweisi Mfume represented Maryland's 7th Congressional
District from 1986 until February 1996, when he took over the helm of the NAACP. The former
Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), he consistently advocated landmark minority
business and civil rights legislation during his years in Congress. Mr. Mfume served as Chair of the
CBC Task Force to Preserve Affirmative Action and as the Vice Chairman for Communications in
the House Democratic Caucus.
Norman Y. Mineta, a native of San Jose, represented California's 15th Congressional District for
21 years. He was one of 120,000 Americans of Japanese ancestry interned during the War. While
in Congress, he was the driving force behind passage of the Civil Liberties Act of 1988, which
redressed these injustices. Mr. Mineta was the House Democratic Deputy Whip. A founder and
first chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, he is currently Senior Vice
President of Lockheed Martin.

Music in America: Celebrating Our Industry's Diversity (7:00 - 9:00 p.m.), a gala
musical celebration at Constitution Hall, showcasing the diversity of American
music with performances by Kathleen Battle (Sony Classical), Buddy Guy
(Silverstone Records). Richard Marx (Capitol Records), The Four Tops (Motown)
and The Temptations (Motown), Trisha Yearwood (MCA Nashville) and The
Corrs (Atlantic Records).
As you may know, NARM is an 1,100 member international trade association representing
the interests of prerecorded entertainment software retailers, wholesalers, distributors, and
suppliers, as well as suppliers of related products and services. Each year, the NARM
Convention attracts over 3,000 attendees, primarily from the prerecorded music industry.
This year's Convention marks the first time the event is being held in Washington. The
RIAA is the trade association representing the U.S. recording industry. Our members create,
market and distribute approximately 90 percent of all legitimate sound recordings produced
and sold in the United States, and many of our members and executives will be attending the
NARM Convention.
It would be a great honor for us to have you attend what will undoubtedly be a weekend rich
in American music.
