My Dear Mrs. Clinton:
White House Curator, Rex Scouten, has advised us that the three alba
dogwood which the Woman's National Democratic Club presented to you in
written form last November should be planted between April 25 and May 15
this spring. You may remember that these dogwood will go in a small
triangle outside the Oval Office near the Southwest Gate.
This note is to ask if you would have time to attend the Hillary
Rodham Clinton alba dogwoods as they become a part of the permanent
White House landscape plan? If so, it would be our honor and great pleasure
to join you at a planting date of your convenience between the 25th and 15th.
"We" would be a representative group from the Club:
10 Executive Officers, or
26 Executive Officers and Elected Governors, or
32 Executive Officers, Elected Governors and the
Educational Foundation Board.
My presence will add one to each of these choices.
Mr. Scouten assures me that the number attending will be entirely
according to your wish. Further, we will be comfortable with however many
WNDC representatives seems most appropriate and manageable to you. Our
primary hope is that you will be able to participate in this planting on the
White House grounds in your name.
In anticipation that you will be able to fit a time and date into your
schedule, I will be in touch with your office staff and look forward to the
possibility of an especially bright and memorable spring occasion.

SUBJECT: Tree Planting Ceremony, Thursday, May 26th at 3:00pm
Earlier this year, Mrs. Clinton attended a luncheon at the
Woman's National Democratic Club. During the luncheon, a gift of
three dogwood trees were given (symbolically) to Mrs. Clinton
with the understanding that a planting ceremony would be held
later at an appropriate time.
Suggested scenario for the tree planting ceremony:
2:30pm
Thursday, May 26th
- Twenty representatives of the Woman's National
Democratic Club arrive at the east gate
(Executive Officers, elected Governors and the
Educational Foundation Board)
- The guests are each presented with a Garden brochure
and are escorted through the Jacqueline Kennedy
Garden, around the east side of the south oval
(there will be jumbo photographs of previous tree
planting ceremonies on display), past the south
fountain to the triangle near the south west gate,
which is the planting site.
- If time permits, we could show the Children's Garden
3:00pm
- Mrs. Barbara Zelenko, President of the Woman's
National Democratic Club makes remarks, concluding
with a presentation of the trees to the White
House in honor of Mrs. Clinton.
- The trees will be sitting in the ground and
ceremonial shovels will be provided.
- Mrs. Clinton and Barbara Zelenko and each of the
guests in turn will shovel earth around the trees.
- The guests are escorted up the east side of the oval
driveway through the Rose Garden, via the Ground
Floor of the Residence and out the East Gate.
Enclosed is a list of the attendees. I will plan on clearing
them in at 2:30pm at the East Gate.

As we discussed enclosed please find a photo and
transparency of the portrait of Eleanor Roosevelt that
Daniel Greene wishes to donate to the White House. Also
enclosed are photos of two other portraits by Dan of Mrs.
Roosevelt, one used on the cover of her biography, the
other exhibited at the Roosevelt Musuem at Hyde Park.
Additional information on Dan is also enclosed.
Again, Dan wishes to donate the portrait - his
only condition is that the presentation be in person to
Hillary Rodham Clinton and/or the President, so that he
gets the public relations benefit. As you can see from the
material included, Dan is a major american painter and in
particular, a leading portrait painter.

Daniel E. Greene was born in

He attended the
Art Academy of Cincinnati and studied in New York in 1953-54 at the Art Students
League.
In 1967, he was elected as an Associate National Academician and in 1969 was elected
a full Academician. He served on the Board of Directors of the Academy as Treasurer.
He taught painting at the National Academy of Design in New York for 5 years. Mr.
Greene also taught painting for 8 years at the Art Students League of New York. He now
conducts private classes.
Mr. Greene is the author of "Pastel" published by Watson Guptill, 1974. "Pastel" is now
in its eighth printing. A recent edition has been published in German. A new revised edi-
tion will be published in 1986.
Mr. Greene's book "The Art of Pastel", published in 1973, is available worldwide in five
language.
In 1983, Mr. Greene was elected to the Pastel Society of America Hall of Fame.
The Encyclopedia Britannica considers. Mr. Greene the foremost pastel artist in the
United States.

Dear Mr. Scouten:
As per our recent phone conversations, the following was the
sequence of events. My sister, Gail Greene, now known as Dr. Galia
Golan, attended Brandeis University in the 1950's. I visited my sister there
during a time when Mrs. Roosevelt and Adlai Stevenson were teaching
once a month. Before and during a lecture given by Mrs. Roosevelt I was
off to the side and sketched a very rapid pastel portrait. (A photo of the
work, now in the FDR Library is enclosed). I was motivated solely on the
basis of being an admirer of Mrs. Roosevelt.
My sister majored in Political Science and became friendly with
Mrs. Roosevelt. Through a later correspondence she was invited to meet
Mrs. Roosevelt in Paris for tea when my sister was studying at the
Sorbonne and later met with her again several times at Mrs. Roosevelt's
apartment in New York. Unbeknownst to my sister at the time, Mrs.

In 1966 Gail, a Mc Arthur Fellow, moved to Jerusalem where she is
now Dr. Galia Golan, a Darwin Professor of Soviet and East European
Studies and Chairperson of the Department of Political Science at Hebrew
University. She is also one of the world's leading experts on the Soviet
Union in the Middle East and has published widely including: The
Czechoslovak Reform Movement: Communism in Crisis 1962-1968;
Reform Rule in Czechoslovakia: the Dubcek Era 1968-1969; Yom Kippur
and after: The Soviet Union and the Middle East Crisis: The Soviet Union
and the Palestine Liberation Movement; an Uneasy Alliance.

Galia started the first woman's programs in Israel and is very
involved as the spokesperson for the "Peace Now" movement. She
mentioned knowing a number of people known to Mrs. Clinton: Sarah
Erhman, Stanley Scheinbaum, Barbra Streisand and Letty Cottin Pogrebin
among others.
My pastel of Mrs. Roosevelt was reproduced in 1963 in McCalls
magazine to accompany a "Final Remembrance" and several years later was
purchased by a collector and donated to the FDR Library. An oil portrait
that I developed from the sketch and photographs was similarily acquired.
I painted the pastel that is being presented at the White House in the early
1960's and made it public on the occasion of the 100th centennial of Mrs.
Roosevelt's birth in 1984.
In 1984, Clement Conger expressed interest in having the portrait
for the Rousevelt wing at the White House, but it was thought prudent to
wait for a Democratic administration. Upon learning of the high esteem in
which Mrs. Clinton holds Eleanor Roosevelt, I initiated the proceedings to
give the portrait to President and Mrs. Clinton.
In order to insure that the proposal reached the appropriate people, I
enlisted my close friends, Donald Laventhal and his wife Susan Penry-
Williams of Reid and Priest, whose law partner in Washington, Bill Kirk
knows Mrs. Clinton's Chief of Staff Maggie Williams and her assistant
Evelyn Lieberman, in order to bring the gift to the attention of the First
Lady.
Thank you again for all your efforts on my behalf. I look forward to
meeting you at 3:30 Thursday, May 26.

Greene, a recognized artist. The painter wishes to give it to
the White House.
Greene is a living artist, therefore, the work cannot be
accepted for the White House collection, although I doubt we

Daniel Greene, N.A. is a former instructor of painting at the National
Academy of Design and The Art Students League of New York. He is the
author of Pastel now in its ninth printing, and the Art of Pastel which has
been published in English, French, German, Spanish, and Italian. In 1969 Mr.
Greene was elected to the National Academy of Design.
Mr. Greene is the Honorary Vice-President of the Pastel Society of America
and was one the first artists designated as a Master Pastelist. He has been
named an Honorary member of the Kansas Pastel Society and serves as an
Advisor to the Pastel Society of the West Coast. In 1983 the Pastel Society
of America elected him to the Pastel Hall of Fame, the first living artist SO
honored. The Encyclopaedia Britannica considers Mr. Greene the foremost
pastelist in the United States. He has been the recipient of two Gold Medals
and other awards in the Pastel Society of America Exhibitions; and recently
was awarded Best in show at the Kansas Pastel Society International
Exhibition. In 1989 his work represented the United States at the first
international Biennial of Pastel in San Quentin, France. He has just been
awarded American Artist's magazine's first annual Achievement Award in
the category of oil painting.
Mr. Greene's paintings and pastels are in over 400 public and private
collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He has been the
recipient of the Elizabeth T. Greenshields Foundation Grant and the Anna Lee
Stacey Foundation Grant. In addition he has won Gold Medals, Best in Show
and other prizes in all the important national art exhibitions including
awards at the National Academy of Design, American Watercolor Society,
Allied Artists of America, and Audubon Artists. In October, 1985 Mr. Greene
was the feature artist in American Artist Magazine with an analysis of his
work by the editor, the 8th time articles about his work have appeared in
this publication. In 1985 a show of his paintings and pastels was held the
the Henoch Gallery in New York. In addition to two New York galleries, his
composition, figure and still-life paintings are handled by Harcourts
Contemporary in San Francisco and Henri Depoid Galleries in Brittany and
Paris. A retrospective exhibition of Mr. Greene's paintings and pastels was
held in 1987 at the Hammond Museum in New York.
Highly regarded as a portrait artist, his subjects include leaders of
government, banking, education, and industry. A few of the more famous
people include Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt, Astronaut Walter Schirra, Author Ayn
Rand, and William Randolph Hearst. Some governmental portraits include:
Governor Scott of North Carolina, Governor Lehman of New York, Governor
Laxalt of Nevada, Governor Beliles of Virginia as well as two Mayors of New
York City, Mayor O'Dwyer and Mayor Wagner. Some recent portraits include
Prince Fumaki Kenoe of the Japanese Imperial Family, John Mack Carter,
Hearst Publishing Company, and Bryant Gumbel of NBC. A partial list of
sitters includes the Chairman of the Boards of Honeywell, Coca Cola
company, Dupont corporation, American Express, The New York Stock
Exchange, and IBM. Mr. Greene has also painted the Deans, Presidents and
others for: Tufts, Duke, Franklin and Marshall, Columbia, North Carolina,
West Point, Delaware, New York, Rutgers, Princeton, Yale and Harvard
Universities.

HILLARY CLINTON ACCEPTS DANIEL GREENE'S
PORTRAIT OF ELEANOR ROOSEVELT
WASHINGTON, D.C., May 26 -- In a special White House
ceremony today, internationally acclaimed artist Daniel Greene,
N.A. presented Hillary Rodham Clinton a pastel portrait of the
First Lady's role model, Eleanor Roosevelt.
It is certain that this portrait of Eleanor Roosevelt
holds special meaning for Hillary Clinton. Last year, it was
reported she took a train to New York City in a snowstorm to
attend a "First Ladies of Song" gala that raised funds for a
statue of Eleanor Roosevelt to be installed in a New York park
this year. "I only hope as the years go by, my heart and my mind
will expand and grow so that some day I will feel worthy of
being mentioned in the same sentence with her," she said.
In the late 1950's, Daniel Greene did a rapid pastel
portrait of Eleanor Roosevelt during one of her lectures at
Brandeis University. The study produced three portraits. Two of
Greene's portraits from 1960-62, an oil and a pastel, are in the
permanent collection of the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial
Library at Hyde Park, New York.
The third portrait, the pastel presented to Hillary
Clinton today, was made public in 1984 to commemorate the
centennial of Mrs. Roosevelt's birth. Mr. Greene, a longtime
admirer of Eleanor Roosevelt, says: "Rarely has an artist had an
opportunity to paint one whose character and moral strength are
so clearly evident visually. To me, Mrs. Roosevelt personified
all that is noble and beautiful." " Upon learning that Mrs.
Clinton holds Mrs. Roosevelt in such high esteem, Greene adds:
"I hoped that with Mrs. Clinton's help, this last portrait could
eventually be displayed in a national public institution and
enjoyed by large numbers of Mrs. Roosevelt's admirers." Now, his
wish has come true.

Born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1934, Daniel Greene, N.A. now
resides in North Salem, New York. He is a former instructor of
painting at the National Academy of Design and the Art Students
League in New York. He is the author of Pastel, now in its
eighteenth printing, and the Art of Pastel which has been
published in English, French, German, Spanish and Italian. In
1969, Mr. Greene was elected to the National Academy of Design.
Mr. Greene's portraits include leaders of government,
banking, education and industry. His paintings and pastels are
in over 400 public and private collections including the
Metropolitan Museum of Art. He has been the recipient of the

York and rode the subways, he saw the long-neglected subway
mosaics with a fresh eye. The result: a striking group of
paintings called "Subway Series." In 1992, a highly successful
exhibition of these works was opened by Mayor Dinkins at Gallery
Henoch in New York. A new exhibit, "Rapid Transit Riders" is
planned for December '94 at Gallery Henoch and October '95 at
Louis Newman Galleries, Beverly Hills.
