Presidential Design Awards Ceremony
I am writing to seek your guidance on how GSA might initiate communication with the
White House to arrange for the President and/or Mrs. Clinton to present Round Four of
the Presidential Awards for Design Excellence.
Recently, GSA signed an interagency agreement with the National Endowment for the
Arts to manage and provide primary funding for the quadrennial Presidential Design
Awards. GSA would like to have a White House ceremony to present the Round Four
awards and have the President announce the call for entries for the next round, which
would be presented in the fall of 1999.
President Clinton announced the call for entries for Round Four in a White House
ceremony in the East Room on April 28, 1994, when he and Mrs. Clinton presented the
awards for Round Three. I believe the NEA had a commitment from the White House to
do the awards ceremony, but no specific date has ever been confirmed.
Nine project have been selected to receive awards. They range from Focus: Hope Center
for Advanced Technologies in Detroit funded by the Department of Commerce to the
design of the food label by the Food and Drug Administration.
The Presidential Design Awards exemplify several major goals of the Clinton
Administration:
Providing cost- effective government
Fostering innovation and creativity
Improving U.S. global competitiveness
Enhancing quality of life
Establishing successful public-private partnerships
