SUBJECT: Native American Sculpture Exhibition
The exhibition "Twentieth Century Sculpture at the White House:
Honoring Native America" will be installed on September 22 and 23
in the Jacqueline Kennedy Garden.
Since November is Native American Month, I suggest that some
event be held during November for the lending institutions,
artists and others in the Native American community. Having an
event shortly after the exhibition is installed would assist in
informing people that the exhibition is on view here at the White
House.

OFFICE OF THE CURATOR
The White House curatorial office holds as its prime concern the
care and preservation of the historic and artistic contents of
the Executive Residence. As the home of the highest elective
officer of the United States, the White House has been intimately
associated with the official and personal lives of Presidents of
the United States and their families. Congressional legislation
and Executive Orders have fixed certain responsibilities relative
to the care, preservation and interpretation of the White House,
and it is these charges that the Office of the Curator endeavors
to implement and carry out.
1. REPORTS TO THE PRESIDENT AND FIRST LADY ON MATTERS RELATING
TO THE HISTORY OF THE WHITE HOUSE AND ITS COLLECTIONS.
The office provides assistance to the President and First
Lady regarding the furnishings of their living and office
areas and seeks paintings and other art work for these spaces
as requested. The Curator serves as the liaison between the
First Lady and her staff and the Committee for the
Preservation of the White House.
2. WORKS CLOSELY WITH THE COMMITTEE FOR THE PRESERVATION OF THE
WHITE HOUSE TO PRESERVE AND INTERPRET THE MUSEUM CHARACTER
OF THE PUBLIC ROOMS
The office brings matters relating to the public areas of the
White House to the attention of the Committee for the
Preservation of the White House for consideration and review.
3. RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CARE, PRESERVATION AND MANAGEMENT
OF AN HISTORIC COLLECTION OF MORE THAN 30,000 OBJECTS
The office is the focal White House unit for all acquisitions
for the permanent White House collection. It reviews and
consults with the Committee for the Preservation of the White
White House on all acquisition matters and keeps records,
including photographs, of every object in the collection
according to the standards of the museum profession. It
conducts research on objects and provides for the proper care
and storage of the collection as well as overseeing the
conservation of objects as needed.
Inventories of White House rooms dating from the first
inventory of 1801 to the annual inventories of the 20th
century are available to researchers. The Curator's Office
and the National Park Service conduct an annual inventory.
4. RESEARCH CENTER AND REPOSITORY FOR WHITE HOUSE HISTORY
The office creates and maintains extensive records relating
to the social and architectural history of the White House,
including accounts of White House events during each
administration, documentation of the architectural and
decorative changes to the building and its rooms, a history
of each room from the period of its first occupants and a
detailed history of the White House grounds.
The photographic files are extensive. They include interior
and exterior views of the White House from the 1840s to the
present. A large print collection documents the building and
events in the 19th century.
An extensive research library includes books dealing with the
history of the White House, its grounds, the city of
Washington, D. C., the Presidents and First Ladies and the
fine and decorative arts. Over 500 periodicals relating to
White House history are also in the library.
The library has holdings of videotapes and film footage
pertaining to the White House and its occupants from the late
19th century to the present.
5. INTERPRETS THE WHITE HOUSE AND ITS COLLECTIONS
The office works closely with the White House Historical
Association on the publication of its books relating to the
White House and with the Association and the National Park
Service on the production of other interpretative materials.
It also reviews books and articles for historical accuracy
which are published by other institutions and provides
historical information to the White House staff, historians,
curators, writers, the press and the general public.
All exhibits seen during White House tours are created by the
curatorial staff. It also coordinates all loans of White
House objects to the Smithsonian Institution and presidential
libraries and sites as well as loans of paintings from museums
for the First Family.
Members of the staff conduct detailed White House tours for
special guests and museum groups and lecture to historical and
museum groups throughout the country.
The staff prepares room guides and other training materials
for the White House tour guides.

Grandmother Taught Me
Essay Contest for 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th Grade Students
"What My Grandmother Taught Me" is an essay contest sponsored by Mobil Corporation that
is open to all 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grade students at District of Columbia Public Schools.
Students are invited to submit an essay of no more than 500 words that describes the valuable
lessons they have learned from their grandmothers.
Grandmothers honored in the essays may be actual grandmothers but may also be other
individuals such as a grandfather or other relative, a family friend, neighbor or "adoptive"
grandparent whose wisdom and caring have had a positive influence in the student's life.
Students may describe a grandmother or other individual who is now deceased but whose
care and teaching continue to influence the student's life.
Deadline: October 28, 1997
Contest deadline is October 28, 1997. Essays will be reviewed by a panel of English teachers
from the school district under the direction of Jennifer Gibbs-Phillips, Director of Technical
Support and Training, State Education and Community Relations.
Prizes:
Mobil Corporation will send a certificate of honor to each grandmother described in the essays
submitted. Students will need to include the name and address of their grandmother in their
essay submission.
From the essays submitted, the panel will select 25 winning essays. Winning students and
their grandmothers will be honored at a luncheon hosted by Mobil Corporation at the Museum
of Women in the Arts on Thursday, November 20.
As part of their prize, winning students and their guests will tour an exhibition of American
Indian Pottery and Weaving entitled "Legacy of Generations" and "Woven by Grandmothers"
and have an opportunity to speak with one of the artists in the exhibition. At the luncheon, the
artist will share her own history of "things my grandmother taught me." Students will be
individually recognized with the grandmothers and each student will receive an engraved pen
and leather journal. Grandmothers will receive a plaque recognizing their contribution.
What My Grandmother Taught Me
Essay Contest
How to submit an essay:
Student's essay must describe valuable lesson(s) learned from a grandmother,
grandfather or other relative, family friend, neighbor or "adoptive" grandparent.
Essays must be 500 words or less.
Essays must be double-spaced and can be typed or printed clearly.
Essay must include the student's name and grade, teacher's name and junior or senior
high school.
Essays should include the name and mailing address of the individual honored in the
essay. (This is to enable Mobil Corporation to mail a certification of honor to each
individual honored in the contest.)
Essay must be received by October 28, 1997 and should be sent to
Mrs. Jennifer Gibbs-Phillips, Rabaut Administrative Unit, North Dakota and Kansas Aves. NW,
Room 221, Washington, DC 20011.
Announcement of Winning Essays:
Winning students will be notified in a letter to the principal, the week of November 3.
The luncheon honoring the winning students and their grandmothers will take place on
Thursday, November 20 at the Museum of Women in the Arts.
Transportation from the school location will be provided for students and their
grandmothers.
